Feud: Bette and Joan Premiere: What To Expect

Ryan Murphy’s newest anthology series, Feud, will tackle the infamous Bette Davis and Joan Crawford rivalry.

Ryan Murphy is slowly but surely taking over the television world. And there is nothing I’ve been more sure of in AT LEAST the past year than the fact that we are in very good hands. The latest addition to his canon kicks off with a brand new anthology series called Feud. More importantly, I believe this will quickly join his established library of mega-hits. Obviously, said library includes Glee, American Horror Story, and American Crime Story.

Now that he’s narratively tackled musical teens, at least 6 different brands of horror, and true crime, there’s only one logical next step: famous feuds. And lucky for us, his first famous fighting duo is one that will be equal parts delicious and heartbreaking to endure. In Feud, Murphy tackles the near lifelong rivalry between utter stars and famed divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

Susan Sarandon and Better Davis play Davis and Crawford respectively. Further, this season will focus on the time during (and after) the filming of Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?, the 1962 cult horror classic. And while this film and its co-stars have been the focus of endless Hollywood lore, Feud aims to give us a more human account of these women. Plus, it will focus on their struggles in both their careers and hopelessly intertwined personal lives.

This Sunday, we’ll start to get a taste of the culture that existed between and around these two women. But despite the obvious and implied drama, Ryan Murphy won’t give in to stereotypes or camp. It seems, to our excitement, that Murphy shows more interest in exploring the broader implications of the feud. At least, more than he does in the exploitative minutiae of a rivalry — especially one between women.

To find out how the FX website describes this sure-to-be refreshing, honest, and strangely feminist complicated tale, here’s the Feud synopsis:

"FEUD: Bette and Joan, the first installment of the new FX anthology series from Ryan Murphy, tells the story of the legendary rivalry between Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) and Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) during their collaboration on the Academy Award®-nominated thriller What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and well after the cameras stopped rolling. The series explores how the two women endured ageism, sexism, and misogyny while struggling to hang on to success and fame in the twilight of their careers."

This appears to be a feud better off diving into than resolving! Well, if the glamorous, exciting romp of a trailer featured above is any indication.

Feud starts Sunday, March 5, at 10 p.m. E.T.
