Face Off Season 11 Episode 6 Recap: Wasteland Warriors
Welcome to this week’s Face Off All-Stars recap. We’re going straight for end times with post-apocalyptic looks inspired by Mad Mad: Fury Road.
Last week found Ben, Evan, Keaghlan and Melissa on the bottom of the heap in Troubling Transformations. Let’s see if they rally for this week’s elimination challenge.
The gang is standing out in the middle of nowhere. McKenzie drives up in a little blue sedan to tell them the theme of the elimination challenge. It’s inspired by her ride (and Face Off sponsor) Hundai, and its slogan, “We make things better.” But what are they going to make better?

This Week’s Challenge
Cars! But we’re not talking about your typical family sedan, unless you’re related to Immortan Joe. A a dusty line of post-apocalyptic cars, a la Mad Max: Fury Road, drives in from the distance. The name of this week’s challenge is Wasteland Warriors. Melissa is a huge fan (Furiosa lives!!!) so she’s excited for this week’s challenge. I hope she’s inspired enough to stay safe this week, at least.
But of course there’s more. Each car comes with a chest full of janky old car parts that the artists must incorporate at least three into their makeups. The teams all pick their vehicle and box of junk, but McKenzie isn’t done with them yet. She has a surprise! The little blue Hundai Veloster is part of this season’s grand prize.

Contestant Challenge Choices
- Gage and Rachael: Their vehicle is somewhere between a jeep and a tank, with what has to be a 10-foot grill in the front. It’s basically a big cage with bones in it. The plan is to design a scavenger character who goes out and finds gasoline and water. They are totally on the same page.
- Cig and George: They picked a huge 1970s sedan. This is Cig’s favorite challenge ever. Their character, Phoenix, is a wasteland chick who’s going to purify the wasteland with fire and cigarettes.
- Emily and Tyler: They chose a dune buggy with no roof and a horned cow skull on the roll bar. It’s covered in animal skins. Emily and Tyler want to make a powerful desert huntress with a feather mohawk. Wigs are Emily’s wheelhouse, so this should be good.
- Logan and Adam: This team picks the motorcycle. Their car parts inspire Adam to design a flag-bearer ronin warrior outcast. Logan isn’t nuts about the flags because of the drag from riding a bike, but Adam goes with his instincts.
- Keaghlan and Melissa: They are so excited this week! These ladies chose another giant 70s sedan that is basically a tank. They’re actually going to go for the machine gun arm.
- Ben and Evan: They picked a little VW bug on jacked up truck tires with a Caddy grill. But Ben isn’t feeling inspired. You guys need to pull yourselves out of your funk so you aren’t on the bottom again. As they head back to the lab, Ben and Evan still don’t have a concept.

Mentoring Time
Michael’s here for mentoring time, and Ben and Evan are finally settled on an idea. Their character is The Inferno, who has a suit that keeps him cool. Michael likes their story and gives them a few tips about their sculpt and doing burn makeups. Michael does think Gage and Rachael are doing enough with the face, and suggests some big scars and a blind eye. He likes Cig and George’s warrior woman and suggests they add more definition so it reads from a distance. Then he suggests that Logan and Adam add tattoos into their warrior’s face.

Lab Work
Things go smoothly from here, with everyone running around the lab with weird postapocalytpic junk and skulls. Melissa and Keaghlan are having a much time than last week. Logan and Adam run into some issues though, when Logan breaks one of the samurai swords Adam made. Emily and Tyler have immunity last week, but Emily’s still putting everything into her wig. It’s looking so cool.

On application day, Gage and Rachel run into problems with their face piece’s thick edges, so they scrap it. They’re just going to paint their model’s face. But it looks like everyone else’s appliances look great, and even Logan and Adam are happy. By the time it’s time to leave the lab for the day, Gage and Rachael are feeling behind because of the face piece snafu. Evan paints their clear face piece neon green. He says it will look OK in the final makeup, but I’m kinda worried.

Last Looks
In last looks, it’s just mad painting. There are no major dramas until Adam looks at the character after time is called. Logan dusted the model’s face and Adam thinks she now looks like a post-apocalyptic chimney sweep. It’s not that bad, is it?

It’s time for the judges to see the contestant’s work. Stakes are high, since it’s an elimination week. There’s a guest judge, Paul W.S. Anderson, of Thrill Race and the Resident Evil movies.
So how did everyone do with their Wasteland Warrior car part creations? This week, they announce the winner before saying who’s on the bottom.

Top Look

Cig and George are this week’s winning team. Their makeup is just awesome. Glenn loves all the little details. I didn’t notice before, but the character’s mohawk do is actually bolts and saw blades. Anderson says the design is terrific. The judges are really digging it (as is the model, who is really getting into her cigarette-smoking savior role). They’ve stuck a radiator piece on her shoulder that Glenn says looks like it’s actually functional. Ve also loves the designs they’ve incorporated into the burn makeup.
Mushy Middle

Emily and Tyler: OMG Sava the Huntress is fabulous. Ve loves the body paint. But Anderson says it reminds him of Clive Barker, and the judges agree think it doesn’t exactly meet the post-apocalyptic challenge. Even though it is gorgeous. Neville thinks it’s a unique and cool character and he loves the gradation of black to red to cream on her head and face. But Glenn has a huge issue with the fact that is just doesn’t follow the challenge. He still goes on to call it a triumphant in terms of both color and form and it’s a smashing success. But not a winner because of the lack of apocalyptic-ness.

Ben and Evan: You can definitely definitely tell it’s supposed to be a burn victim. Oh! That green face piece is a face-protection mask! But the judges don’t really like the face appliance. Ve thinks it looks like stretched-out Silly Putty. Glenn thinks it’s a super cool and complete character. Neville points out that the bright green is a great color note, because it’s reminiscent of antifreeze. It looks authentically aged. Anderson does comment that they gave themselves extra work by making a mask and a face appliance, and wonders if either could have been better if they concentrated on just one.
Bottom Looks
FACE OFF — “Wasteland Warriors” Episode 1106 — Pictured: Makeup by Rachael Wagner and Gage Hubbard — (Photo by: Jordin Althaus/Syfy)
Gage and Rachael: Scry The Scavenger has a pretty sweet chest piece from afar, but it’s not so great up close. The judges think the wrinkles are “nebulous and formless,” and that the makeup isn’t terribly well-done. Rachael explains to Ve that they were excited about the concept, but they’re not happy about the makeup. Ve agrees. It could be a lot more realistic. She thinks they should have made the car parts into an appliance he can wear instead of embedding them like exposed organs. Anderson says they should have left more to the imagination and concentrated on perfecting fewer design elements. Glenn thinks they lost their way a little.

Logan and Adam: The Raven has a lot of junk on her and she’s a little hard to see underneath it all. The judges it’s a really cool idea, but the paint job is dreadful. Adam is very worried about the muddiness of their makeup. Ve tells them the makeup just is not good. It looks like they just kinda airbrushed it. She asks about the character’s arm scars. Adam says they are tallies of … “something she is keeping track of.” Ve’s disappointed he didn’t do something like make them infected. It’s a missed opportunity. She likes the tribal face paint, but they covered it up (which Adam was worried about), and there’s just a lack of detail in the makeup.
FACE OFF — “Wasteland Warriors” Episode 1106 — Pictured: Makeup by Keaghlan Ashley and Melissa Ebbe — (Photo by: Jordin Althaus/Syfy)
Keaghlan and Melissa: The gun arm is pretty fab at first glance. I don’t know about their face piece and makeup, though. The judges think the idea is cool, but they’re confused about the color choices. Anderson likes the way the electrical stuff goes into the character’s flesh. Mangle The Dweller the raider warlord. Glenn comments her face makeup needs more erosion, like if they’d gone in there with a spray bottle to make it look streaky and weathered. Ve is not happy with the paint, which is not lifelike. Neville doesn’t think the bone sticking out of her gun arm looks at all realistic and says they should have skipped it.
And The Loser Is?
Ve says they’re obviously doing things different this week, and the bottom looks get another hour to make their characters better. Just like Hundai’s slogan! They run back to the last looks room for some adjustments. The scramble around, trying to answer to the judges’ critiques.
