Okja Gets a Netflix Premiere Date and a New Teaser

Netflix has snagged Bong Joon Ho’s next movie, Okja, and today the streaming service gave us a fresh look at the film, including Tilda Swinton.

Although Netflix’s original TV series have plenty of greats among them, it’s tougher to say the same for its original movies. (We exclude the wonderful Beasts of No Nation and Imperial Dreams from this vague criticism. Look, Adam Sandler has made a home in Netflix’s original movies. We rest our case.) However, it looks like Netflix really wants to change that perception.

It almost certainly explains why they have picked up Bong Joon Ho’s next movie. We tip our hats to io9 for finding the trailer for Okja.

Check it out below:

Fans of Snowpiercer will likely be pleased to see Tilda Swinton working with the director once again. This time, we can even recognize her face and not just her voice. Does anyone else get vague Nicole Kidman vibes from her in this role? It’s something to do with how big her eyes look and the pale, pale blonde, we think. Maybe she’s channeling Kidman as Mrs. Coulter in The Golden Compass.

With Snowpiercer, Bong created an often claustrophobic film, aided by the fact that it’s set on a train. It looks like Okja, as also noted by io9, will go somewhere else entirely. That appears to be at least partially due to the more open and bright spaces. Snowpiercer wasn’t really bright anywhere except to see the frozen outside world. Okja has some actual nature going on.

Here’s Netflix’s official description, as attached to the trailer:

"“From visionary Director Bong Joon Ho, this grand global adventure follows a friendship too big to ignore. Meet Mija, a young girl who risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named Okja. Following her across continents, the coming-of-age comedy drama sees Mija’s horizons expand in a way one never would want for one’s children, coming up against the harsh realities of genetically modified food experimentation, globalization, eco-terrorism, and humanity’s obsession with image, brand and self-promotion.”"

“Obsession with image, brand and self-promotion?” We get the feeling that has to do with Swinton’s character.
