Caitriona Balfe Promises Lots of Intimate Scenes in Outlander Season 3

Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe is known for some of the most intense sex ever to appear on television and promises season 3 won’t be any different.

Caitriona Balfe knows how much fans love her show. Outlander fans are more than happy to wait until September 2017 for season 3. But many speculate whether the show will have the same level of female gaze as season past. Caitriona was recently being honored at the 12th annual Oscar Wilde Awards. There she was asked if the reunion sex between Claire and Jamie would be just as hot as fans were used to seeing.

The interviewer is basically asking if old people can have sex. Thankfully, Cait dropped kicked that question of ageism. “In terms of the sex, I think old people have good sex too, last I heard!”

She is absolutely right, and books three in the Outlander series supports that but let’s delve in deeper why this question is so important.

For the non-Outlander book readers who don’t want to be spoiled on major plots points, avert your eyes now. For those who have read the third book, Voyager we already know Claire travels back to Jamie’s timeline. She’s eventually reunited with her one true love, Jamie but 20 years have passed for both of them. The awkwardness of that alone would cause anyone an anxiety attack. And the thought of having sex would give one heart palpitations.

Our loves are not the same people they once were. But one thing is constant, they can’t keep their hands off each other at any age. Being a woman of a certain age, I always felt this was an essential element of Diana’s books. Not just showing young love but to demonstrating a healthy sexual relationship has no age.

Just because Claire and Jamie are well into to their 40s when they are reunited doesn’t mean that sexual desire goes away. It might make some younger people feel uncomfortable to see two older people having sex. But, it is nonetheless a healthy part of a relationship. To be perfectly honest, I think Claire and Jamie in the books have the best sex when they are well into their 50’s.

Outlander has been lauded for introducing many to the female gaze. But I think its greatest achievement might come next season.  Then it’ll start breaking down boundaries of ageism when it comes to sex on television.
