Oscars 2017: Mahershala Ali Wins Supporting Actor

Hollywood’s biggest night — the Oscars 2017 — are finally here, and we’ll be live-blogging to see which nominee wins Best Supporting Actor!

There are five amazing actors up for the award for Best Supporting Actor. Some, obviously, are more favored to win than others. We list the actors who are nominated below and put them in the order in which they are, in our opinion, most likely to win.

So here are the nominees, with the winner revealed at the bottom:

Mahershala Ali: Although this is the first-ever nomination for Mahershala Ali, he’s a projected winner in a lot of Oscars 2017 predictions. And it’s no wonder: his role in Moonlight was amongst one of the best of the year.

Lucas Hedges: Right behind Mahershala Ali is Lucas Hedges. Like Ali, this is Hedges’ first-ever Oscar nomination — and it probably won’t be his last. The young actor was the sole bright spot in the depressing Manchester by the Sea.

Jeff Bridges: For the Oscars 2017, legendary actor Jeff Bridges is up for an award for his role in Hell or High Water, a film that hasn’t received that much buzz. Of all the actors on the list that are up for this award, Bridges is the most nominated actor. He’s previously been nominated as the Best Actor three times (for his roles in True Grit, Crazy Heart, and Starman) and as a Best Supporting Actor three times (for his roles in The Contender, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, and The Last Picture Show). He won a Best Actor Oscar for his role in Crazy Heart.

Dev Patel: This year, Dev Patel earned a nomination for his role in Lion. And this also happens to be his first Oscars nomination.

Michael Shannon: For the Oscars 2017, Michael Shannon — best known for his roles in the DCEU as General Zod — has been nominated for his role in Nocturnal Animals. This is the second Oscars nomination for Shannon — he was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Revolutionary Road.
