Supergirl Season 2 Episode 13 “Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk” Recap

Supergirl aired this week with their “Sanvers-centric” Valentine’s Day episode and it was nothing short of “talk, dark, and blan-some.”

Boy, do I have some words about this episode. I’ll just get this first part out of the way:

Mon-El vs. Mxyzptlk.

Or in other words, where two frat boys try to out-impress one another for Kara Danvers.

The episode starts off exactly where we left off. Mr. Mxyzptlk randomly shows up right before Mon-El and Kara can kiss. He confesses his love to Kara, asks her to marry him, and she’s physically rendered speechless. I wasn’t quite fond of this guy until he described Mon-El perfectly, “talk, dark, and blan-some.” Fine, I’ll give you a chance Mr. Mxyzptlk. He’s not giving up on making Kara his wife though, and he’s getting a bit aggressive about it. J’onn tells her he’s a fifth dimensional being and the only way to get rid of him is by making him say his name backwards.

The goal of this fifth dimensional creature is to “woo” Kara Danvers so he starts off by bringing Parasite back to life. He wants to play the hero and prove to Kara he’s worthy of her love. Mon-El, on the other hand, isn’t having it and is trying to “woo” Kara himself. The entire dynamic between these two is annoying, over-done, and just plain boring. Kara spent the entire episode yelling at two different men that she was capable of defending herself and that she was okay being alone. Shockingly, neither of them listened.

Mon-El, being typical Mon-El, doesn’t care what Kara says, so he takes it upon himself to get rid of our good friend Mr. Mxyzptlk. Queue the Hamilton puns. And surprise! Kara has to go save him. How many times does that make this now?

Kara shows up just in time and agrees to marry Mxyzptlk in order to save him from killing Mon-El. She wants to do this back on her home planet though so they meet one another there and Kara drops a truth bomb- she lied, and isn’t going to marry him. But this guy still isn’t giving up, and this is where young boys get the idea that they can force girls into liking them. Kara finally tricks him and gets him to say his name backwards. Bye-bye, Mr. Mxyzptlk.

She ends up back on Earth with Mon-El. He apologizes, finally. He calls Kara his kryptonite. They have a really messed up dialogue about how Mon-El sucks a listening, and then they kiss.

Not impressed that Kara’s Valentine’s Day episode consisted of two overly aggressive macho men fighting for her and how she was seen as someones mail-order bride, but here we are.

Meanwhile, Winn is being saved by hot girls from bar fights. Enter Lyra. Hopefully we’ll see more of her in the upcoming episodes.

“Sanvers-centric,” you say?

Where do I even begin here? A few weeks ago, The CW advertised this specific episode as “Maggie/Alex-centric.” What part of this episode was “sanvers-centric” though? There total screen time added up to about 4 minutes. C’mon now.

The story between them starts off in Alex’s apartment. Maggie explains that she hate Valentine’s Day while Alex is casually sipping her coffee, not wanting to admit that she was actually excited for this day. Alex decides to celebrate it anyway. Maybe she can change Maggie’s mind with a little lingerie. That night, she puts a little music on, dims the lights, and leaves a card for Maggie to find.

Maggie’s not having it. She begins explaining to Alex why she hates Valentine’s Day so much. It was the day she was outed to her parents and she had to go live with her aunt for 3 years because of it. She’s saying this to Alex through tears and storms out.

Realizing that she made a mistake, she goes to look for Alex at the DEO but isn’t anywhere to be found. She runs into Kara though, who explains how excited Alex was to spend this day with someone she finally loved. Maggie knows she needs to do something so she recreates a “Valentine’s Day prom” for Alex, and begins digging the grave of every sanvers shipper while doing so.

Now, I really loved these 4 minutes of sanvers time that Supergirl gave us this week. I really did. I thought it was special and important and beautiful and heartwarming. But on no planet did these 4 minutes qualify as “sanvers-centric,” and that was the disappointing part.

It was queer-baiting at its finest. Dangling the promise of more screen time for a f|f ship so more viewers tune in, but then not following through with it. I understand that Kara Danvers is and always will be the main character of this show, but why does the scene between her and Mon-El at the end of the episode need to be at least double the length of the scene between Maggie and Alex? Why will a m|f ship constantly be put before a f|f ship? This episode was no different in terms of sanvers screen time than previous episodes so let’s not advertise as such. I’m willing to bet that this show just pissed a lot of people off but doing that and if you’re one of those who can’t understand why, then speak to someone who does. It’s tiring.
