Stephen Colbert Talks Trump with John Oliver, Gets Higher Ratings

Stephen Colbert sits down with John Oliver last night to discuss Betsy DeVos, Steve Bannon, green cards, and our entire country up in flames basically.

Before we kick off our recap of yet another infamous “Colbert Talks Trump” clip, we’d first like to congratulate Colbert on some exiting news. For the first time since The Late Show premiered, Colbert was the highest viewed show on any of the late night shows last week. For awhile now, Colbert’s ratings have been just missing Jimmy Fallon’s but last week, they finally surpassed them with 2.77 million viewers over the week of Feb. 3.

So what gives? What’s different now than it was in the past?

Trump. Hold the applause. Stephen Colbert, along with a string of other late night hosts, have been reaping the benefits of a Trump presidency since early 2016. And last night was obviously no different.

Colbert sat down with John Oliver last night and explained that “not a lot has happened” since Oliver was last on the air (November). Oliver said that it’s mostly just “cosmetic differences” in the states since then, meaning “flames and the fact America is in it.

Check out the full clip here:

They talked a little about Betsy DeVos and Steve Bannon before Oliver touched on his green card and if he feels safe in the country now. “I am slightly concerned. I have an American wife and an American son now, but who knows what’s enough?” Oliver asked. “Having a green card used to be enough, and yet what we saw with that executive order on immigration, that debacle, things are not what they were supposed to be.”

We have a long way to go,” says Oliver. We couldn’t agree more. But at least our late night hosts are getting better ratings because they have some seriously concerning topics to cover recently. Ahhh, the silver lining.
