J.K. Rowling Tweets About the Quebec Massacre More Than Donald Trump

J.K. Rowling tweets about the terrorist attack in Canada, while Donald Trump remains silent.

J.K. Rowling’s Twitter is absolutely incredible, as all Harry Potter fans must know by now. When she’s not spilling secrets about the extended Harry Potter universe, she’s snarking on haters, shutting down trolls and speaking passionately about political issues that are close to her heart. Like say, ending discrimination and standing up against oppression, the main themes of the whole Harry Potter book series.

Most recently, she took to Twitter to share the words of Imam Hassan Guillet at the funeral for the victims of the Quebec Massacre.

What Happened

For those who don’t know, a white supremacist in Quebec City recently attacked a Mosque and murdered six men. A funeral was held last week for some of the victims and Imam Hassan Guillet gave a heartfelt and widely appreciated speech mourning all the victims: including the 27-year-old shooter. Here is a transcript of his words, from the CBC:

"Alexandre, before being a killer he was a victim himself. Before planting his bullets in the heads of his victims, somebody planted ideas more dangerous than the bullets in his head. This little kid didn’t wake up in the morning and say ‘Hey guys instead of going to have a picnic or watching the Canadiens, I will go kill some people in the mosque.’ It doesn’t happen that way.Day after day, week after week, month after month, certain politicians unfortunately, and certain reporters unfortunately, and certain media were poisoning our atmosphere."

“Certain politicians” was no doubt referring to U.S. President Donald Trump, of whom the shooter was reportedly a supporter and fan. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was quick to condemn the shooter as a terrorist. But President Trump has not made a public statement about the incident at all. He tweeted about the attack at the Louvre in Paris, where no one was killed. That’s because that attacker was an Egyptian man. A homegrown white terrorist got no response from the President.

J.K. Rowling, meanwhile, has tweeted about the Quebec attack five times. In a time where Muslims are being targeted, demonized and ostracized more than ever, it’s so important that Rowling is using her platform for good. She’s sharing the gravitas of Imam Guillet’s words with her 9.5 million followers.
