Deadpool and His Movies Live in Their Own Universe, In Case You Didn’t Know

The writers of Deadpool confirmed that his movies live in their own universe. Which is fine, because then he can make fun of the other cinematic universes.

Did you really think Deadpool would join up with other movie franchises?

Sure, he’s owned by Fox, and Fox also owns the X-Men, and Deadpool does do a lot with the X-Men. But you can’t keep Deadpool locked up in a cinematic universe.

He already made jokes around the continuity of the X-Men film franchise (“McAvoy or Stewart” is still my favorite line from the movie). Plus, he’s a character who knows he’s in a superhero movie and constantly breaks the fourth wall to talk to the audience. That doesn’t really fit into a master cinematic universe plan.

It should come as no surprise that the writers of both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 pretty much confirmed that to The Hollywood Reporter:

"What’s nice is Deadpool exists in his own universe. He’s part of the larger X-Men universe, but in a way he isn’t. He interacts with that world but he is in the present. We don’t deal with the ‘60s or the ‘70s or the future. It’s here and now. More than anything, I think he’s going to have his fun with what they do in the other franchise. But fortunately, we don’t have to play by those same rules."

They also take a shot at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how it’s “all connected” and movies have to set up other movies and plot lines, and how they don’t feel the need to do that.

Let’s be frank: With how many times the continuity has been reset in the X-Men movie universe, why even bother trying to set it right? Logan isn’t exactly taking place in the same timeline as prior X-Men movies. And let’s not even get into all the TV shows that are coming out.

So be happy Deadpool lives in his own universe. Because it means we’ll get even more ridiculous jokes from the Merc with a Mouth about the ridiculousness of every other superhero movie.
