There were many lessons to learn in the Harry Potter universe, but sometimes seriousness makes way for humor. We’re taking a look at some of our favorite funniest Harry Potter characters.
In a world where the Dark Lord is constantly pursuing you, it’s good to find the humor in something. Though the Harry Potter series could be dark at times, there was always some lightheartedness to guide us on our journey. Pottermore recapped their own list of funniest Harry Potter characters, and we’d like to share a few of our favorites too.

Professor Gilderoy Lockhart
He was well-spoken, handsome, and a fearless wizard (we thought). Played by Kenneth Branagh in the film version of Chamber of Secrets, this guy was nothing more than a peacock with better suits. Lockhart was constantly filled with hot air, and had nothing to back it up. But what made him funny was the extent to which he believed his own bravado. He became a full-on caricature of himself and every version of a brave, Dark Arts master known to wizarding kind. Gilderoy made for a nice break in all the spider and Basilisk action.
Neville Longbottom
Neville was the kind of character who couldn’t really catch a break. But that never really broke his spirit. He was funny for the bumbling, kind of awkward gentleman he turned out to be. But don’t get it twisted. We’re laughing with Neville and not at him. He’s the kind of character we love to watch but can’t help giggle at times they stumble along the way. His bravery showed up in other ways, but in the meantime he had that lovable nerd quality that was hard not to crack a smile at.
Argus Filch
Filch was an angry sort of guy. Just imagine being a Squib your entire life and confined to spending all day every day around a bunch of wizards. That would tick anyone off. But Filch was more than happy to take out his ire on everyone else. When he wasn’t muttering in silence, he was looking for opportunities to wield the small power he had. This is the kind of character where it’s okay to laugh at his misfortunes. He treated everyone around him like crap, so the sillier things that happened to him at Hogwarts were more funny than anything.
Albus Dumbledore
Dumbledore is one of the more serious characters in Harry Potter, but one can admit he had a great sense of humor. The Hogwarts headmaster has a very dry sense of humor. It shines brightest when he has these little moments of honesty with his students (think about his experience with Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans). Throughout all the chaos that befell Hogwarts during his tenure as headmaster, Dumbledore kept it light. Looking at the positives in life, which is what he tried to do, will make you see all sorts of ways humor can shine forth.
