The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the Oscar nominations for the 89th Academy Awards, and we have snubs and surprises.

The Oscars is widely considered the pinnacle of movie award shows. It is the award that can immediately launch a career. Today, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released its Oscar nominations for the 89th Academy Awards, and we have some snubs and surprises.

As expected, the Golden Globe darling, La La Land, was a big winner in today’s announcement of Oscar nominations. It claimed 14 nominations, tying All About Eve and Titanic for the most nominations ever.

Everyone expected the Best Actress category was a lock for Amy Adams in Arrival and Annette Bening for 20th Century Women, but they were both left out in the cold. Golden Globe winner Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Ruth Negga for Loving have swooped in as the dark horses in this group. Also noticeably left off the ballot for Best Original Song is Pharrell’s “Sing Street” for the movie Hidden Figures.

The psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals earned only one nomination, and it wasn’t for Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It was for his co-star Michael Shannon, who basically shut Florence Foster Jenkins star Hugh Grant out of the Best Supporting Actor category. Viggo Mortensen’s work in Captain Fantastic also won him a surprise nomination for Best Actor.

Congrats should also go to Lin-Manuel Miranda after locking in his first Oscar nomination. “How Far I’ll Go”, from Moana, is up for Best Original Song. If he manages to go home with a win, this will make Miranda the 13th EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner in history.

The often discounted streaming-video companies have won big this award season. The film Manchester by the Sea made history by giving Amazon its first Oscar nomination for Best Picture, Best Actor (Casey Affleck), Best Supporting Actor (Lucas Hedges), Best Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams), Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Netflix also scored a nom for Best Documentary in Ava DuVernay’s 13th.

As for some of the genre films, there were hits and misses. Sorry, Deadpool fans, no nomination this year. In an odd turn of events, though, Suicide Squad was able to sneak in the Best Hair and Makeup category. The critically panned Passengers still managed to get an Oscar nod for Best Score and Best Production Design.

The Academy also made huge strides to be more inclusive after years of criticism. Nonwhite characters led nine of the four Best Picture nominees, and seven actors of color each won a nod. It’s a great start, but it doesn’t mean #OscarsSoWhite is over.
