Actress Margot Robbie is photographed decked out in full ’80s wear to play controversial former Olympic pro Tonya Harding in new biopic.

2017 just started, but the films of 2018 are already preparing to go in front of cameras. Earlier this week, photographers caught Australian actress Margot Robbie on the set of her new film, director Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya. Robbie prepares to play disgraced Olympian Tonya Harding, and she’s definitely looking the part. The biopic will chart Harding’s rise from scrappy ingenue to Olympic medalist – best known for being the first to perform the triple axle.

However, Harding’s world came crashing down in 1994 when an unknown assailant attacked and injured Hardy’s competitor Nancy Kerrigan. After an investigation, authorities determined that Harding’s husband Jeff Gillooly and a friend committed the attack. Investigators also discovered that Harding had knowledge of the incident. Plus, rumors circulated that she orchestrated the whole thing. Unfortunately, Harding was stripped of her titles and banned from skating.

Alongside Robbie, I, Tonya stars Sebastian Stan as Gillooly, Allison Janney, and the recently announced Julianne Nicholson.

To be honest, I’ve dreamed about a Tonya Harding biopic for years. Something about the rivalry between Harding and Kerrigan fascinates me. For example, many considered Harding as the white-trash upstart with amazing talent pitted against the blue-blooded, statuesque Kerrigan. Of course, if you’ve ever watched Harding’s performances, there’s no denying the skill she possessed. If you haven’t, be sure to watch the fabulous The Price of Gold, a documentary about the incident for a better examination.

Although, as far as the biopic goes, I’ll admit disappointment that Amy Adams – a dead-ringer for Harding – isn’t here. Robbie’s fine, but the padding under clothes seems to indicate a desire to play down her looks a la Charlize Theron in Monster. Comparisons are already abounding that if Robbie “uglies up”, she’ll nab an Oscar. There’s also been no talk of who’ll play Nancy Kerrigan. Might I suggest Girls’ Alison Williams? She possesses the regal bearing and wide smile that Kerrigan happened to be best known for.
