5 Movies That Will Remind You That Good Always Beats Evil
By Buckie Wells
Need a movie recommendation? Or a quick reminder that this won’t be the end of the world? Then here are five movies to remind you we’ll get through this.
As we usher in a new era of dissidence, fear and hatred, there are a few things we can reflect on to remember the good times. First and foremost, a movie’s job is to provide an escape. Whether you’re into fantasy, science-fiction or just a straight drama, a good movie helps you forget about all the crazy things going on around you.
Unfortunately, things will seem weird for the next few years. Where “weird” stands for dark and scary. And I’m not here to alarm you, because that’s not my style, but Trump doesn’t say a lot of positive things. In fact, he says a lot of downright terrible things, and he’s about to be sworn into office. Luckily, I can do some maths. I crunched some numbers. And if my calculations are correct, we could lock ourselves in a bunker and watch more than five-thousand movies! For the next four years, we could pop in a film back to back to back and probably watch every single movie on Netflix. How’s that for Netflix and chill?
But since nobody’s going to sit down and do that — curling up in a ball and doing nothing is not the answer — we picked five movies that’ll remind you we can get through this. The next four years aren’t going to be easy, but good trumps evil every time.
Let’s take a look:
5. The Lion King
Accountability — an abstract idea that few have mastered. Now Trump’s obviously not a good example, but if you get yourself some popcorn and watch The Lion King, you’ll get a good idea. See, Simba ran away from home. Through the power of manipulation, Scar took power and drove the pride into starvation. But then Simba returned! He faced his fears and accepted his calling, proving that even the villains with great musical numbers can be defeated.
4. The Princess Bride
The bad guy in this movie literally stole a woman and labeled her as his property. I have a feeling that Trump and Humperdink would be great friends. Yet, Westley found a way to rescue her with the power of love. That’s right — pure, honest, death-defying, non-racist, hardworking, not left-handed love. Here’s your daily reminder that love wins every time. But first, to the pain!
3. Star Wars
It might’ve taken three movies for the Empire to fall, but it’s right there in the title. The Empire Strikes Back (a.k.a. the 2016 Presidential Election) got really intense for a minute and it seemed like all hope was lost, but then the Jedi returned! And if the Star Wars movies have taught us anything, it’s that a little bit of hope goes a long way. And if a much smarter opponent like Emperor Palpatine can be defeated, then they all can.
2. Harry Potter
Harry Potter won because he had love and friendship. Every entry in the series spends its two hours emphasizing light and dark: “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.” Several years passed between the time Harry Potter arrived at Hogwarts and the time he defeated Voldemort. So even though we have four years in front of us, just remember that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. And that when you surround yourself with friends and family who love you, you can get through anything.
1. The Matrix
Whether you like The Matrix franchise or not, it was totally ahead of its time. And that’s in terms of both special effects and philosophical ideas. I mean, it’s pretty grand. Thomas Anderson was just a regular nerd who woke up from his supposed reality and realized he needed to take action against the machine. Even when he doubted his abilities, he kept going and eventually defeated Agent Smith, which results in peace between the humans and machines.
(Also, The Matrix is the best one. Anyone who disagrees can meet me outside.)
