It’s time to hit the lights as the designers of Project Runway Junior are challenged to incorporate LED lights into their designs.
This week, we catch up with the designers on the runway as they’re introduced to the “stress test” with Justine Armour, the lead ad lady from Secret deodorant. To “pioneer” through the fashion industry, the designers have to use LEDs with their designs. With $350, they’ll be able to shop at MOOD and get one day to complete the design. Immediately, Allie feels a little apprehensive. After 30 minutes of sketch time, it’s clear which designers have a clear idea of where they’re going and which ones don’t.
Secret gives the kids a backpack full of swag. Like any kid, they get really hyped about bags. Another surprise is Madison Maxey, an LED expert who will assist in any way she can. Then, Tim name drops the usual suspects, like the Brother sewing room. Before Tim returns with his suggestions, Chris decides he knows best and tells Hawwaa she made bad color choices. I’m glad Chris likes the Golden Girls, but his shirt is practically the same color as Hawwaa’s fabric! Madison Maxey is very friendly and actually paying attention to the kids. She’s giving them solid advice about battery pack placement and whatnot.
Let’s see what Tim thinks!

Allie, Chelsea, and Cartier didn’t receive a visit. Obviously, this means they’re on the right track. However, that can’t be said for everyone:
- Izzy: Izzy embroidered and Tim thinks it’s wacky. Bubbliness doesn’t help you advance.
- A’kai: “Economies of labor” is Tim’s advice for A’kai, except he doesn’t have a clue what that even means. Poor child.
- Hawwaa: Tim dropped the Golden Girls reference, too. But he doesn’t think the design is very pretty and advises her to give it more wow.
- Molly: Get rid of the chiffon overlay, Tim says. But also, she’s got an excellent pattern and color scheme going on. I love it.
- Chris: Chris is making something that looks like Fruit Loops and Jolly Ranchers. Tim thinks it has too much color already and to use the lights for cohesion. Suddenly, I want some cereal.
- Tieler: He’s hand sewing stuff and Tim’s alright with it.
And that’s all we have time for!
With three hours to go, the designers try to punch it into overdrive and make adjustments where necessary. When the models arrive, A’kai’s model is sweet, and Izzy has to apologize for not having a lot to test. A’kai’s design reminds me of jellyfish when he tries it out, but cleverly hid the battery pack by draping fabric in the back like Elsa’s outfit in Frozen after she let it go.
In terms of makeup, Butter does its thing. On the day of the runway, the designers frantically work to complete their designs. Chris feels good about his “hard and soft look” but he used hot glue for stuff, and one of his LEDs breaks. So apparently, A’kai doesn’t like Star Wars and I just stopped thinking he was cute. On the other hand, Generous SpiritTM Chelsea gives away one of her LEDs.
Now, let’s see what the judges think!
