Avengers: Infinity War Will Feature Nebula, Says Karen Gillan
By I. A. Melton
Karen Gillan just announced her Guardians of the Galaxy character Nebula will be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, but what will her storyline look like?
Rumors have been swirling that Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel will reunite almost every major Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character. It looks as the major players have already promised to return. It looks as if we can add Karen Gillan’s Nebula from the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies to the list.
Karen Gillan dropped by the BBC to promote her cinematic directorial debut. However, she also said, “I’ll be making a little appearance in the next Avengers movies”. Gillan suggested that Nebula’s appearance would probably be more like a cameo. If the Avengers: Infinity War stays in line with the Infinity Gauntlet comic book storyline, though, then Nebula will have a significant role to play.
This is great news for Karen Gillan and her character Nebula. The feeling that Nebula’s storyline was not properly fleshed out is a common critique made by fans. Instead of coming off as a boss space pirate with a complicated past with her adopted father Thanos, she was whittled down to a petulant daughter. Furthermore, Gillan had to deliver throwaway one-liners that didn’t move the story forward. If you don’t believe me, just watch the movie over again. Ask yourself: if Nebula wasn’t in Guardians of the Galaxy, would the outcome have been the same?
This is not the first time the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had problems with writing stories for female characters. They have completely missed the mark with Jane Foster (Thor), Lady Sif (Thor) and Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3). To a larger degree Black Widow (Avengers) and Pepper Potts (Iron Man) have had the same issue. None of their stories have much screen time. Thankfully, the MCU’s Netflix division has done a terrific job in fleshing out the storylines of the supporting women.

We hope Karen Gillan’s Nebula gets a better storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and in Avengers: Infinity War as well. If the MCU sticks with the comic book plot, we should see much more of Nebula.
