Stranger Things Will be ‘Bigger and Potentially Darker’ in Season 2

The first season of Stranger Things left us with a lot of questions and ended on a cliffhanger that could potentially lead down a much darker path.

In its premiere season, Stranger Things spent most of its time unfolding a rather large narrative. We met the main cast and learned about the Upside Down. And when the season ended, Will Byers returned home, but he wasn’t really alone (He was coughing up slugs, kind of like that scene in Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.) Further, we lost Eleven, though there was some indication she may still return. Many aspects of Stranger Things presented much bigger and much more abstract concepts than just a missing boy or telekinetic girl.

To this end, Stranger Things director and executive-producer, Shawn Levy told Vanity Fair:

"“Season 2 is bigger and potentially darker in its stakes. The threat, which in Season 1 was to Will Byers, has grown. That’s all I’m going to say! But, I will say Season 2 has a bigger cast and is definitely loyal to the kind of magical storytelling that we established in the first season. It’s character-based and still about our core group of characters.”"

While most of the characters from Season 1 are expected to return, Noah Schnapp, who played Will Byers and was basically missing all season, promises, “You’ll be seeing more of me. I’ll be there. In the last episode, I threw up a slug, so Season 2 begins with what happens from there. There may have been some effect on him. I may or may not have turned into a monster. You’ll have to watch to find out.”

Now, we previously learned that Stranger Things will move forward a year instead of picking up right where Season 1 left off. I think Schnapp is speaking in a general sense and not specifically the day after. The first season took place in November 1983 with the first trailer for Season 2 confirming we’d pick up “In the Fall of 1984.”

Basically, we know very little about the Upside Down. We don’t know what it is, what is does to people or what else is in there. With all the acclaim the show has drawn, the Duffer Brothers will likely have more seasons to explore this. And hopefully, make it a lot darker.

Stranger Things Season 2 returns this summer.
