The identity of one of the villains in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie has been revealed. The movie is scheduled for release in June 2017.

Each time a new trailer or image from the Wonder Woman movie is released, some of us get a little giddy. (Ok, some of us get a lot giddy.) As the June premiere inches closer and closer, we get more and more bits of information. The latest bit involves the identity of one of the (at least) two villains making an appearance in Wonder Woman. Although this latest revelation isn’t too surprising, it’s still exciting to have confirmation.

So just who will the Amazonian princess have to defeat? The villain is….

ARES!

Yes, the god of war is Wonder Woman’s big enemy. In an interview printed in the French magazine Studio Ciné Live (and shared and translated at “Les Toiles Heroiques”), Chris Pine explains how his character, Steve Trevor, ends up on Themyscira. “I play a pilot who works for the Allies and spies on the Germans without their knowledge,” he says. “My character steals a notebook filled with scientific formulas in an Ottoman base, he steals a plane but is shot down in the open sea.”

The article then goes on to explain how this is connected to Ares.

"Behind these scientific formulas, there is a deadly gas that could well annihilate humanity. It turns out that it might interest Ares, the god of war. He is jealous of humanity, which is a creation of his father, the deceased Zeus (the Amazons and Zeus rebelled against Ares and Zeus died from the hand of his son)…“Why did Zeus create the Amazons? Because shaping man in his image made his son Ares, incidentally a god of war, mad with jealousy, he convinces the guys to confront each other. To restore harmony between them, Zeus created the Amazons that Ares reduced to slavery. The Amazons revolt with the help of Zeus, who will die of the hand of his son having had time to find Themyscira, their haven of peace where they will grow Diana.”"

Now that there’s confirmation that Danny Huston’s role in the film is indeed that of Ares, that just leaves one major antagonist unidentified. So far, fan speculation points at the possibility of Doctor Poison.
