The Full List of Artists Who Won’t Perform at Donald Trump’s Inauguration [UPDATED]
By I. A. Melton
It’s not surprising President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration team can’t find A-List music acts for the ceremony. What’s amazing is the people he asked.
Almost immediately after the election last November President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration team has worked tirelessly attempting to find anyone with an ounce of star power to play at the ceremonies. With Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C., time is running out, and he still has no one. What’s surprising are the people he has the audacity to ask.
Andrea Bocelli
The Italian classical singer name was one of the first names mentioned as an inauguration performer. PEOPLE reported he was slated to sing a duet with America’s Got Talent contestant Jackie Evancho, who has confirmed she will sing the national anthem. She states it’s not political and that she has the support of her transgender sister Juliet Evancho. Bocelli has pulled out after a public backlash.
Elton John
Donald Trump is a big fan of Elton John’s music. He’s even gone as far as to play like “Tiny Dancer” and “Rocket Man” repeatedly at his rallies. Despite reports from the Trump camp Elton John would play at the inauguration, it was quickly shot down by his rep. One should also note that John was a very vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Céline Dion
Long time friend of Trump, Steve Wynn was apparently was suppose to lockdown Celine Dion for the inauguration but could not deliver. For Wynn’s part, his spokesman states he wasn’t asked to help book particular performers but why wouldn’t you ask her seeing as she is the biggest A-list start playing at your hotel.
Kanye West
After Donald Trump won the election, he actually took a meeting with Kanye West. We don’t know what exactly what was said in the meeting, but I wouldn’t doubt Trump made the pitch for West to play at the inauguration.
Garth Brooks
The country superstar, Garth Brooks looked to be interested in playing the event but had second thoughts. He formally pulled out two weeks later.
Rebecca Ferguson
The British X-Factor songstress seemed ready to perform at Trump’s inauguration, but the deal began to unravel when she insisted on singing the politically charged song “Strange Fruit.” If you’re not familiar with the song you can hear it here.
David Foster
The award-winning music hitmaker was reported to have a significant role in the inauguration recruiting musicians to play the event. Foster quickly distances himself from the report. In an exclusive interview with People, he stated, “I was invited to participate and I politely declined.”
Charlotte Church
The Welsh singer-songwriter gave one of the most direct responses to Trump’s invitation to play at the inauguration. She took to Twitter and sent her message directly to Donald Trump. It stated “Your staff have asked me to sing at your inauguration, a simple Internet search would show I think you’re a tyrant. Bye.” She ended her message with four poop emojis.
KISS
Gene Simmons’ wife Shannon Tweed was approached by TMZ and asked if KISS would play at the inauguration. She gave an emphatic “NO” and said the group declined the invitation. She also stated the group would be touring in Europe and wouldn’t have been available.
Moby
It would only take someone to look at Moby’s Instagram to know how he feels about Donald Trump. It’s not great, but someone thought he might still be interested in playing the inauguration. Moby for his credit took to Instagram to say he would do it if Trump released his tax returns. I guess that was a hard pass from Trump.
Rockettes/Mormon Tabernacle Choir
Mormon Tabernacle Choir singer Jan Chamberlin resigned from the group rather than sing for Trump. Initially, The Rockettes management made it a requirement for all of its members to perform but a have since backed away from the demand after a dancers social media post went viral.
It looks like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is trying to help Trump’s inauguration team fill in some blanks spaces in its Garden State Gala with landing a Bruce Springsteen cover band. I have a feeling “The Boss” would be very unhappy about this.
R. Kelly
The Grammy-winning R&B singer, R. Kelly took to his Twitter account to dispell any rumors that he would be performing at Trump’s inauguration.
Marie Osmond
American actress and singer Marie Osmond has a lot to say to Yahoo Finance when asked if she was invited to play at Donald Trump’s inauguration, would she do it. Here’s what she had to say.
"“I don’t get political … But when it comes to our country, I think we need to unite. And to not support our president, I think, is wrong. I think we should all support our president whether we’re happy or sad. This is America. We should come together and I think an inauguration should be a time to unite, it really should.”"
After a few days, Marie Osmond clarified her remark with a statement.
"“Many of you have seen various stories saying that I volunteered or that I am performing at the inauguration. So let me be clear: I have no intention of performing at this inauguration, no matter who won!”"
It should be noted, Marie and her brother Donny Osmond have performed at several inaugural ceremonies including Ronald Reagan’s in 1981.
Paul Anka
The famed “My Way” singer and longtime friend of Donald Trump recently told TMZ he would not be able to perform at the inaugural events due to a scheduling conflict caused by his two-year custody battle for his son.
Jennifer Holliday
The Tony-winning Dreamgirls singer Jennifer Holliday has a change of heart and has decided not to perform at Trump inauguration festivities. The New York Times broke the news of Holliday’s participation. When asked about her involvement, she stated “I’m singing on the mall for the people. I don’t have a dog in this fight – I’m just a singer, and it’s a welcome concert for the people on the mall.” The LBGT community who’ve supported Holliday for many years felt her association with the inauguration as a slap in the face. After some consideration, she decided to announce she was pulling out of the event altogether. You can read her entire statement/apology here. A big question to J-Holliday fans is, are you still going to love her?
[UPDATE]
The B-Street Band (Bruce Springsteen tribute band)
Bruce Springsteen tribute band, the B-Street Band, has officially pulled the plug on playing the New Jersey’s Garden State Inaugural Gala. This would have been the third year in a row the B-Street band played during the presidential Inauguration festivities. The band even had the gig booked over a year ago; way before the election occurred. The B-Street Band drew criticism from fans and The Boss himself for continuing to play at the inauguration. Springsteen has been a vocal opponent of Donald Trump. I guess we all know who’s The Boss.
Garth Brooks
We told you earlier that Country music star Garth Brooks had expressed interest performing at the inauguration but quickly had second thoughts. Brooks decided to explain his decision not to perform on his Facebook page. He explained the popularity of his cross-country tour would prevent him from participating in the inauguration. He did, however, confirm it was hotel mogul Steve Wynn who approached him to perform. In the end, Brooks stated he “left it up to karma.”
Donald Trump’s inauguration team realizing they might have overestimated Trump’s popularity and are now focused on avoiding “a circus-like celebration” when he’s sworn in next week. Chief inauguration planner, Tom Barrack told a pool of reporters “we’re fortunate in that we have the greatest celebrity in the world, which is the president-elect.” Barrack also told reporters they are not trying to surround him with big stars, however “to surround him with the soft sensuality of the place.” My only question is if this was before or after every A-list act turned him down?
If you’re wondering who is scheduled to perform at Trump’s inauguration, you can check out this handy poster made by music writer Dan Ozzi. It begs the question. What exactly will Jon Voight be performing?

While Barrack has insisted this inauguration is “about the people” and not Trump it looks like the people and the A-list acts he wanted will be at a competing event. Women’s March on Washington will hit the streets of Washington, D.C. on Jan. 21. And it’s for sure going to be the event everyone is going to be talking about.
