New Year’s resolutions are something we try and stick with, even when the going gets tough. What could help you keep them in 2017? Relating them to Harry Potter, of course.
It’s a brand new year, and it’s time to get a move on those promises you made to yourself before the end of 2016. But the great thing about New Year’s resolutions is you don’t necessarily have to come up with one before year’s end. You’re going to find more and more things to work on as the year goes on, so why not have a bit of fun with it?
Our friends over at Mugglenet.com came up with 10 New Year’s resolutions for the Potter fan, and we think they’re just great. Some include watching all eight Harry Potter movies in a day, which is no small feat but would be fun. Others were more practical, like joining a Quidditch team or learning to ride a Hippogriff. You know, for exercise! And they also hope you’ll tickle at least one dragon this year!
We have a couple other ideas that may help you in 2017 that are also Potter-related.
1. Make time for your friends
They’re the ones who know you the best and will always have your back. Harry wouldn’t have been the guy he was if it weren’t for the love and support of Ron and Hermione. Even though you’re going to be busy little bees this year, make sure you check in with your buddies, too. Friendships take work!
2. Judge less
In times as divisive as these, it does no one any good to stay stuck in a quagmire of anger at everyone else around you. Harry immediately judged someone like Severus Snape (although Snape made it quite easy for him to do this), but we all learned there was a vast depth behind his sad, dark eyes. It’s best to remember that everyone’s got their own story to tell, it’s just a matter of deciding who will grant you the same courtesy of listening to yours, too.
3. Love yourself!
Love is one of the driving forces of the entire Harry Potter chronicles. It’s what saved Harry from Voldemort’s curse that fateful night in Godric’s Hollow, and it’s what ultimately vanquished the Dark Lord himself. Love is one of the greatest things we as humans can experience, and we open ourselves up to feeling it even more once we learn to love the skin we’re in. It’s not easy, but you have at least 12 more months to work on it!

Another year has only just begun, and we predict great things for everyone going forward in 2017. But that’s only if you look forward and try not to focus on the past as much. Here’s to a very happy, healthy, and lovely new year for you all. And if all else fails and you still feel down and out, your pals here at Wizards and Whatnot have got your back.
