Minneapolis-based company, HuesBox, delivers a monthly beauty box curated exclusively for women of color!
There’s a subscription box for everything these days but when it comes to beauty products: one size doesn’t fit all. For women with darker skin and kinky/coily hair, finding quality beauty products can be challenging. HuesBox, a new lifestyle brand, was created by Robin, Jasmine, and Jenae Harris (a mother and daughter trio) to remedy this problem for women of color.
"“This is by people of color, for people of color—not just African-Americans, Africans,” Robin Harris told MPR News. “We’re talking about Asians, Hispanics, and American Indians because it’s this missing component of other boxes that are out there.”"

Now, we know beauty boxes for women of color is not a new concept but HuesBox is promising to be different by offering exclusive products created by small, black-owned beauty businesses. HuesBox currently has 10 vendors who are all trying to grow their business with more exposure.
"“What you’ll see in our box you won’t see in a store,” she said. “These are small business vendors who are looking for a way to get their products out and their voices out into the broader community.”"
HuesBox, which launched in December, will feature a different ethnic theme each month. December’s box titled “Detox” featured feminine hygiene tea used by Native American, Latino, African, and Asian women.
"“We’ll have products to reduce stress and boost mental health—topics not discussed often in communities of color,” she said. “One of our goals is to generate those conversations and that’s why it’s important that this is not just a makeup box.”"
Each box will have four to six sample-sized products chosen based on your beauty and wellness profile. This short questionnaire collects information about your skin tone, skin sensitivity, hair texture and more. You can choose a monthly delivery for $12 and if you find a product you love, there are full-sized products available for purchase in the HuesBox online store.
Since I’m an avid fan of beauty boxes and I’m a woman of color, I couldn’t help but try the HuesBox. I just signed up and I’m excited to try and share a review of whatever comes in my January box so stay tuned! I’ve been wanting to support small businesses owned by women/people of color in 2017 and this is one way of fulfilling that promise.
