18. Brett Eldredge & Meghan Trainor

Brett Eldredge is a country crooner best known for his songs, “Don’t Ya” and “Wanna Be That Song”. Meghan Trainor is a pop singer with a jazzy sound and uber popular hits, “All About That Bass” and “NO”.  Putting these two artists together for a Christmas duet doesn’t sound like it would make sense, and yet here we are.

Trainor does a great job with “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” Her vocals are strong and the jazziness of the arrangement only helps her voice shine. I would actually like to hear more songs like this from her — understated and soulful rather than loud and full of bubblegum.

With all of the female country singers out there, it is interesting that Trainor is the partner Eldredge picked for this song. You would assume the female part of this duet would have been sung by Kelsea Ballerini or Mickey Guyton — someone with country music cred. Eldredge himself seems to be moving away from his country sound for his Christmas album at least. Glow is a bit more bluesy overall.

Eldredge doesn’t completely escape from his country roots though so at times it seems as if he and Trainor are singing two different songs. Their version of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” is neither creepy nor banteringly enough to make it really stand out although it is a fairly decent version.
