1. Dara Laine & John Weselcouch
If you’re not convinced that “Baby It’s Cold Outside” is actually an okay song, this one is for you. Actually, this version takes the number one spot because it’s funny and empowering all at the same time. Comedian and writer Dara Laine created a “Feminist Approved” version of the song because she really didn’t like what the original was implying.
Called “Baby It’s Consent Inside”, the short song features the guy asking the girl to stay and then the girl turning him down. The guy, played by John Weselcouch, is respectful of her choice. He agrees that her desire to leave is, “totally fine.” Instead of waiting for him to call a cab, she orders her own Uber and leaves on her own terms. There’s no pressure here, and he promises to call her the next day.
In an interview with the BBC Laine said she created her version to raise awareness about consent. “If someone doesn’t want to do anything with you then, right away you should listen to them and respect their decision,” she says. It’s an important message whatever your reading of the original song.
