What Titles Will Be Available on Free Comic Book Day 2017?

Free Comic Book Day will return once again next year, but you can already scope out a list of the free comics that will be given out in May.

Free Comic Book Day is not, in fact, a myth. It just happens to be a once-a-year event, so if you miss it, you’ll have to wait another 364 days or so. Now, it may seem like a pretty irrelevant thing to go to, particularly if you’re not a fan of Marvel and DC Comics, right?

That’s not actually true. Entertainment Weekly has revealed the list of free comic books that will be available on Saturday, May 6. The titles fall into either the gold or silver categories. Just two titles remain a complete secret: a gold title from both Marvel and DC.

Gold Titles to Watch

As a pretty big The Legend of Zelda fan, yours truly will keep her eye out for the Twilight Princess/Ocarina of Time comic from Viz Media. Major TV series also have some great representation here between Rick & MortyDoctor Who, and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Now, to the big two superhero comic book houses. Both have kept their cards close to their chests in this announcement. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t do a little speculating.

This year, Marvel used Free Comic Book Day to launch its Civil War II story line as one of the premiere titles. Will something similar happen this year? It seems like that might be the case. Alternatively, Marvel could promote Thor or Spider-Man, since both have movies arriving in 2017.

DC, meanwhile, promoted Suicide Squad with a oneshot comic featuring none other than Harley Quinn on the cover. Since next year marks the release of a little film called Justice League, it seems safe to guess that that might be DC’s title.

Silver Titles to Watch

Now that we’ve gotten through that massive list, let’s take a moment to break down some of the bigger titles available here. First, DC has once again declined to announce even its silver title. Meanwhile, Marvel has informed us that we’ll be getting Guardians of the Galaxy, a nod to the upcoming film.

Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir has gotten a rather robust following on social media sites like Tumblr. A comic book will almost certainly pull in some of its fanbase. (The show will also premiere its second season in May.) Additionally, the ABC comedy Fresh Off the Boat has gotten a comic book of its own now.

Furthermore, anime fans have two titles to choose from. Attack on Titan, which returns in April of 2017 as a series with season 2, will draw in fans looking for a taste of what’s to come. Meanwhile, Dragon Ball Super and Boruto could easily snag old-school Dragon Ball Z fans as well as more modern Naruto enthusiasts.
