The Walking Dead S7E7 Recap “Sing Me a Song”

Negan’s back and more annoying than ever in this week’s episode of The Walking Dead. What’a a girl gotta do to get Negan off the show?

I know, I know, I know. If you’ve been reading any or all of my recaps for this season’s The Walking Dead, you damn well know by now how much I hate Negan. Yet, here we are. With an episode heavy of him and his posse. And he even seems to be heavy in the next episode too. Cool.

I find it hard to love this show when Negan is still in it. I liked the last two episodes as they both showed some development of where The Walking Dead could finally go But then “Sing Me a Song” came along. One step forward, two steps backward. It’s not fun anymore to watch Negan. His entire story has been told. There’s nothing he could do to shock an audience now. So this is the time in a story or TV show where the character needs to go. Right?

Wrong!

This episode was cringe-worthy to watch to say the least. Although I will say that Carl surprised me. Just in the sense that I didn’t fully hate him in last night’s episode. But let’s not jump to any conclusions about him yet. Michonne and Rosita are working their way onto the top of my favorite characters list. As is Negan’s “wife,” Sherry. And we can’t forget Jesus. Because he’s Jesus.

Okay, now on to the episode:

Let’s start with Carl, who tagged along during Jesus’s trip to Camp Negan. But unlike Jesus, who casually rolled out of the van before anyone could catch him, Carl apparently had other plans. And those were to start shooting the saviors unlike of course, someone knocked him down and took his gun. I thought for sure that this would be Carl’s death episode. First of all, because you can’t just be that much of an idiot and expect to live through it. Second of all, he was also on The Talking Dead and that occasionally means it’s because they died…

But I was wrong. Negan is taking quite a liking to Carl and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing. When Carl first arrives, Daryl sees him and expresses emotion we’ve all been waiting to see from him this season. Negan shows him around the factory building that they’ve populated. He then takes him through a series of physiological tests which just weirded me out completely. Negan made Carl take off his bandage over his eye, and then continued to make fun of him for his scar. He brought up Lori. He made him sing? See, it was weird. As much as I hated watching this scene, I think it was one of Chandler Riggs best performances. His array of emotions in this entire episode actually was just incredible- from pain to vengeance, to sympathy, to hate. At least we know Carl still has humanity left in him.

We were also reminded how powerful Negan is, as he took a hot iron onto another mans face (other than Dwight’s that is). This was another unnecessary scene. It literally showed the man’s skin melting off of his face. This is The Walking Dead, not a horror movie! And then of course, we got to see his little brothel of wives he has stored away. Everything about Negan makes me cringe but this one was the one that boiled my blood the most. I understand that you want to survive and you need to be in charge in order to do that, but you absolutely do not need a brothel of wives to chose from every night to survive an apocalypse.

Negan then takes Carl back to Alexandria. Equally weird. Rick’s out scavenging for supplies and won’t be back for a few days. So Negan makes himself at home here- baby Judith on his lap and all. Talk about blood boiling.

Let’s jump to Michonne’s plot line now:

Michonne means business. The episode kicked off with her casually walking down a street, chopping off the heads of walkers and then dragging them down the road. And then it cut to Negan and Carl. To be honest, I kind of forgot about her until the end of the episode. One of the Saviors was driving down the road and came across a roadblock of walker bodies. Of course! Michonne, you genius! She comes at the Savior, takes her gun, and demands that she takes her to see Negan.

Who unfortunately is at Alexandria currently though… NOOOOOO.

That could’ve been it. Michonne could’ve killed Negan while they were both in Alexandria. All would’ve been right in the world of The Walking Dead. I could’ve slept peacefully. But why would they do that? Why would they satisfy me like that?

What will happen to Michonne at Camp Negan next week? Only time will tell…
