The Walking Dead Recap: “Go Getters”

This week on The Walking Dead “Go Getters”, we’re taken to the Hilltop where Maggie and Sasha are stirring up trouble with Gregory.

Ah, this episode was finally a taste of the old Walking Dead– drama, conflict, passion, and of course, Carl being Carl.

Since the season seven premiere, all we’ve really seen is Negan, Negan, and more Negan. And in case I’m not as clear as I should be in any of my other recaps- I hate Negan. I don’t just hate him. I despise him. I’m sick of him. And I’m more than ready for him to go. So, since this episode didn’t have Negan in it- it was already my favorite of the season.

This episode finally gave us something to push forward with this season’s story. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Okay, back to the episode. Remember when Maggie was having troubles with her pregnancy and the crew set off on an RV ride to the Hilltop? Remember when Negan put up a deadly roadblock and Abraham and Glenn died because of it? Well, it’s safe to say that Maggie finally made it to Hilltop and finally got the care she needed.

The episode begins with Maggie waking up at Hilltop. Her baby is fine but the doctor recommends she stay there for the remainder of her pregnancy. Gregory, the idiotic sexist leader of this place, isn’t having it, and claims that the people of Alexandria are getting them into even more trouble with the Saviors than usual. But kicking Sasha and Maggie out into the streets is only going to cause more problems. He gives them another night and says they have to be gone by morning.

Well, in the middle of the night, a few things go wrong. The community wakes up to their gates open and a car in the middle of their square blasting music, attracting a horde of walkers- the Saviors did this. Sasha, being the badass woman she’s becoming, immediately jumps into action and starts working to turn off the music and kill the walkers. Maggie isn’t supposed to be on her feet too much but goes against her doctors orders and starts bossing people around, telling them what to do. I smell a new leader on this show! She then hops into a tractor and legitimately steam-rolls a slew of walkers. And then there’s Jesus being his ninja, ass-kicking Jesus self. And what’s Gregory doing during all of this? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Some leader he is…

Once Maggie, Sasha, and Jesus singlehandedly (okay, triplehandedly) save Hilltop, the community gets another surprise in the morning- the saviors come back for some supplies. Queue the mustache-sporting Negan wannabe. Gregory tries to sell Maggie and Sasha out in return for the Saviors respect but Jesus won’t let that happen. “Maggie and Sasha are staying. I’m staying. We’re all going to be one big happy dysfunctional family.

And finally Maggie let’s Gregory know that they mean business. First, she clocks him. Then, she yanks the watch back that Gregory stole from Glenn’s grave. Finally, she tells him not to mess with her. “This our home now, so you’ll learn to start to call me by my name. Not Marsha. Not dear. Not honey. Maggie. Maggie Rhee.” Goosebumps. Anyone else???

Moving on to the other half of this episode, which focuses on Carl and Enid rollerskating down an empty road during an apocalypse. You know, typical childhood memories. I mean, don’t get me wrong I still dislike Carl with the fire of a thousand suns, but I like Enid, who likes Carl, so now I’m torn. I feel like I’m stuck in the middle of an apocalyptic teen rom-com. “You can do better, Enid!!” I want to yell.

The two snuck out of Alexandria to make their way to Hilltop. Enid wants to see Maggie. Carl wants to die… Basically. Carl wants to follow the Saviors back to Negan. Stupid Carl. But so does Jesus. The two find each other in the back of the same truck heading back to Camp Negan. They exchange a suspicious glance. I can only imagine what kind of trouble they’re about to get themselves into.

Five episodes in and this show finally has me back, wanting more. We’ve seen just about everyone and everything at this point so there’s really no excuse to keep this story dragging on. I want action. I want a fight. I want vengeance. And I want it all NOW.

Sasha and Maggie are clearly building up a leadership role at the Hilltop. Carl and Jesus are causally riding back to Camp Negan. And Michonne and Rosita are gearing up to fight over at Alexandria.

Will this lethal combination of people finally give the viewers what they want? We’ll just have to wait and see next week.
