What Surprises Could Pop Up in Fantastic Beasts?
With less than a week to go before the release of the latest film in the Harry Potter franchise, anticipation is running high. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set to hit theaters this Thursday with great apprehension as to what surprsies to expect from the film.
Not much is known about the film other than it’s plot that centers around Newt Scamander, an English wizard who arrives in 1920’s New York with a case full of magical creatures. On his appearance on the Ellen Show earlier this month, Eddie Redmayne, who plays Newt, spoke of the wonder of the script J.K. Rowling wrote for the film and ended the interview by hinting at the many secrets of the film.
“There are some great surprises,” Redmayne said about the highly anticipated film. “And one wonderful surprise that I’m really excited about.”
So what could that surprise be?
A preview into the life of Dumbledore and Grindelwald
It was recently confirmed that the cast has signed on for a 5-movie series surrounding the story of Newt and his adventures. Also announced was that Johnny Depp has been cast as the villain of the series, Gellert Grindelwald. As readers learned in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Grindelwald is a friend-turned-enemy of Dumbledore where they met as young adults in Godric’s Hollow.

Grindelwald and Dumbledore bonded over their obsession with the Deathly Hallows and their short-lived friendship ended in a fatal fight in which Grindelwald disappears. The pair spent years at odds but eventually reunited in 1945 for their infamous duel.

It is entirely possible, given Johnny Depp’s confirmed role as Grindelwald, and the timeline of the series, that viewers will see a peak into the work and whereabouts of one, if not both, of the powerful wizards.
Celestina Warbeck
Folks over at Cinema Blend believe the film might tie itself into the life of Celestina Warbeck’s father who worked in the Muggle Liaison Office at the time of Newt’s arrival in New York. Rowling recently released a biography of Celestina Warbeck on Pottermore where the author writes; “Celestina is one of my favorite ‘off-stage’ characters in the whole series and has been part of the Potter world ever since its inception.” This theory may seem a bit far-fetched but with the impending release of the film and Celestina’s biography revealing her birth in 1917, this cannot be easily brushed off as coincidence.
Introducing the magic of the Harry Potter world we know and love
This film is already set to introduce Newt’s discovery of fantastic beasts (and where to find them) so it is entirely possible that viewers will also watch the discovery of other details of the magical world. The world of magic is one that is always growing and so viewers may glimpse the discovery of spells, potions, or laws that later come to be an integral part of the world of Harry Potter in years to come.

With no books to follow the life and adventures of Newt, apart from his beastly discoveries, we cannot be exactly sure of what to expect, but it is safe to say that Fantastic Beasts will still capture that magic that we love so much in the Harry Potter universe.
