Poldark: How Does Everyone Move On? And More Questions for Episode 5

How will everyone move forward after the tragic events of last week’s episode of Poldark? It’s time for 3 questions for the next episode.

Note: This post, by its very nature, contains major spoilers for last week’s episode of Poldark. If you missed the episode, you may want to watch it — or read the Culturess recap.

No, seriously: we mean it, here be spoilers, which may be more dangerous than those krakens that show up on every old map. Anyway, now that we’ve sufficiently warned you, let’s talk Poldark.

Obviously, the biggest development has to be Francis’ untimely death, followed closely by Dwight and Caroline finally managing a kiss. Going into the midpoint of the season, we have multiple questions about where things go from here.

What will George do now that Francis is dead?

Obviously, George’s priority number one will be putting his ownership of Ross’ promissory note to nefarious uses. However, with Francis dead, Elizabeth finds herself very single. While George has said that he wants her friendship only, the looks he gives her suggest he wants way, way more.

Mourning may not save her from visits from George. Moreover, it’s not like her financial state is that much healthier than Ross’. Francis said as much during his dramatic nighttime visit, where he said simply that George could kick everyone out of Trenwith.

Now, we don’t expect Mr. Warleggan to put those kinds of screws on his object of affection, but he may no longer be above avoiding references to them in her presence. Money matters, after all.

At this point, it may be a question of when, not if, George puts a ring on her finger.

How will Dwight get past Ray Penvenen?

So, Dwight and Caroline finally shared a kiss, which provided some much-needed happiness to an episode that sorely needed it. She pointed out that she’ll reach her age of majority in December, which we must conclude will be in a few months just based on people starting to wear heavier coats again.

Until then, though, her uncle Ray speaks for her, and based on next week’s preview, he is not amenable to a doctor asking after the young heiress, his fish-bone-removing skills notwithstanding. Even when she reaches her age of majority, the situation may not really change.

Who knows? Dwight may very well get some lessons from Ross in how to marry in a hurry…

How does Ross move on from the loss of his business partner?

Things really did seem to be looking up for the cousins Poldark. It looks like Francis actually found veins of copper before drowning in an undrained part of the mine, too, which means that Wheal Grace has deigned to be kind to them.

However, now all of the decisions may end up with just Ross, and, well…a 1400-pound loan says everything, doesn’t it?

Hopefully those veins of copper prove profitable. However, the sword of Damocles hangs over Ross’ head still, and the search for money may lead him to some more bad decisions.
