First Look at Tom Felton as Julian Dorn in The Flash

Former Harry Potter star Tom Felton is once again donning the rival hat in his upcoming role on the CW’s hit show, The Flash.

Although many of the adult stars in the Harry Potter films were already big names, those playing Harry and his schoolmates were just breaking into the biz. The likes of Maggie Smith, Jason Isaacs, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, and Helena Bonham Carter were all forces to be reckoned with. But little was known of the Chosen Ones, as it were. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and their onscreen nemesis Tom Felton came in with (mostly) blank résumés

Since then, these child stars have beefed up their credentials with continual projects, whether in acting or other pursuits. Recently, Tom Felton picked up another gig with CW’s The Flash, which follows the adventures of superhero Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). Entertainment Weekly has the scoop, and a sneak peek.

In his new role, Felton will be portraying Julian Dorn, a CSI tech who butts heads more than once with the fleet-footed superhero. While the pair is working on the same team–i.e., the good guys–they won’t quite see eye-to-eye. Executive producer Todd Helbing explained, “[Julian Dorn] is a direct result of Flashpoint. Barry’s had that lab to himself, but now he’s got to share it with this guy, who doesn’t really like him and is kind of prickly.”

So the dynamic’s not exactly Potter-vs.-Malfoy, but the role still seems up Felton’s alley in perhaps an anti-hero way, at least. We’ll have to wait to see what this Dorn character is all about before we make any conclusions on that front.

But it won’t be all a potentially Potter-esque rivalry. The Flash is known for its pop culture references, so surely they’ll make good use of the Harry Potter star in their midst. After all, J.K. Rowling’s world is its own subset of pop culture entirely. If your show’s topical like that, you can bet your bottom dollar that a Potter joke or two will make its way in, especially when you’ve got Draco Malfoy on the bill.

On his end, Felton is looking forward to the jokes. He told EW:

"“I’m so excited for the references. I don’t doubt the talent and creativity of the writers. I’ve got a feeling they’ll come up with some real good ones. I hadn’t thought about me saying it–I assumed it would come at me from Cisco–but maybe I should give it to Cisco. Maybe he should misquote something and I could correct him.”"

For those unfamiliar with The Flash, Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) is the character who usually hits his fellows with the pop culture insights. I’m not sure how the writers will tackle any possible Potter punchlines, but Felton’s got the right idea. Should his guess come to fruition, it would be a nice little nod to Potterheads and Flash fanatics alike.

Season 3 of The Flash premieres tomorrow, October 4. You’ll have to wait beyond then to catch Tom Felton on the show. But if you’re a fan of Barry and the gang, you won’t want to miss how they kick off the year.
