The Most Shocking Moments of the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards
The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards started off with a bang and like all the years previously, it did not disappoint its audience in the slightest.
And the Primetime Emmy Awards started off with quite a bang. Jimmy Kimmel hosted and brought to life the fame that the People Vs OJ Simpson gained this year. From there, Kimmy used all the nominated television shows to make his way to the Emmys. The Dunphy family crashed with Kimmel in the back before James Corden got his Carpool Karaoke primetime fame once more. But the winner of the opening? A surprise Jeb Bush denying Jimmy a ride.
The next came shortly later when Aziz Ansari and Ty Burrell hugged each other after Kimmel asked all the actors of color to hug a white actor near them. Kimmel’s entire speech was on point and calling out the Oscars for the diversity issue. And the Emmys fixed that problem with making history by awarding Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang the award for Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series.
Another shocking moment came with the announcement came on that Bill Cosby would be presenting the next award. The camera panned the audience and many of the actors looked uncomfortable until Jimmy Kimmel awkwardly walked out. He looked around, laughed, and explained it was a joke and it was one of the funniest things he did throughout the entire event.
The first speech of the night to break hearts and make people cry belongs to Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Her speech was normal, cracking jokes and saying Veep brought comedy and politics into each other and then, she thanked her father. He died Friday September 16th, and the camera panned to her husband and Jerry Seinfield while everyone cried. It was heartbreaking and one of the most memorable moments of the night.
Jeffrey Tambor’s speech started as normal but then he said what we all were thinking, making his speech extremely moving and special.
The night that kept on giving.
Sterling K. Brown, famous for his work on People vs. OJ Simpson, won and broke hearts once more. He expressed his love for his father, who’s name was Sterling and the reason he changed his name to such. It was also important since he was the first African-American man to win that night.
And then, Beyonce lost. Thomas Kail, famous for directing Hamilton, beat out Beyonce for directing for his take on Grease! Live.
But that wasn’t the only surprise win. Rami Malek beat out favorite Kevin Spacey in his first season for Mr. Robot. “Please tell me you’re seeing this too,” he said as he looked out into the audience as he accepted his Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Then, the next category shocked us all too as Tatiana Maslany finally won Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Orphan Black.
