More from Harry Potter

Big news today on the Emma Watson front, as Disney, who has been doing a week long build up to *something* concerning the live action remake off the back of the 25th anniversary DVD release of the cartoon, finally tipped their hand. After teasing the terrifying looking concept art for Cogsworth and a straight off the romance cover wig for Dan Stevens’ character when he’s in in non-Beast format, it turns out all this is building to, you guessed it! A trailer.

To hype that trailer (which will be arriving Wednesday September 6th, so please mark your calendars, they’ve put out a brand new teaser, featuring the initial cast table read, and Emma Watson and Dan Stevens together for the first time.

Meanwhile, the more time passes, the clearer it becomes that Emma Watson was the perfect person to play Hermione Granger. The actress has an online book club called Our Shared Shelf, something she began because of her work with UN Women. Accordingly, her selections examine feminism from various angles. Take a look at her choices so far:

  • My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem
  • The Color Purple by Alice Walker
  • How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran
  • The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson
  • Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl by Carrie Brownstein
  • The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

Now, Watson has announced her selection for September and October. She and her followers will read Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Written by husband-wife team Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, Half the Sky was published back in 2009. Here’s what the book is about, in Watson’s words:

"Half the Sky depicts, in eye-opening detail, the various cultures and customs that suppress women and gives a voice to those individuals who need to be heard the most. Traversing through Africa and Asia, Kristof and WuDunn introduce us to some incredibly strong women and describe their stories of suffering and survival. Most importantly, the book spotlights how these women were able to stand up and transform their lives and, through their inspiring examples, we learn that the key to enabling change and economic growth is in unleashing women’s potential (the title of the book, after all, comes from the ancient Chinese proverb, “Women hold up half the sky”)."

Topics include sex trafficking, sexual violence, microfinancing, and girls’ education. As Watson points out, Half the Sky has inspired a worldwide movement designed to raise awareness and empower women.
