Brie Larson took the stage with unbridled excitement at San Diego Comic Con last month to announce that she’d take on the title role in the long awaited female led superhero movie, Captain Marvel. The movie, which won’t be out until 2019 after being pushed back twice to make room for Spiderman’s entrance in the MCU and then again for an Ant-Man sequel, nevertheless has been one of the most anticipated castings of the Marvel on screen pantheon.
That’s because, despite the diversity that’s come to the pages of the Marvel comics in this decade, on screen, the movie franchise has been far more conservative. Year after year, every Marvel movie is led by yet another white dude. In 2018 we will see that change, with the March release of Black Panther. Then in March of 2019, the first female led superhero movie of the Marvel juggernaut will arrive.
Larson’s hype hasn’t stopped there, though! Since SDCC wrapped, we have been graced with a myriad of fun tweets from the actress. Turns out, she might be just as excited as we are to watch her take on Carol!
It’s always interesting to see someone new join the Marvel family. When you’ve got as much rapport with the fans as they have built since 2008’s Iron Man, casting decisions are typically met with much more excitement than distaste. Despite those who might have insisted they wanted Katee Sackhoff or no one, when she was announced, Larson was no exception. Like Bernie fans who decided they could live with Clinton, fans all came around at once.
The weekend of SDCC was filled with her new Marvel family showering her with welcomes and love as well. Chris Evans, who has been vocal about hoping Larson would be the one to get the role prior to the announcement, is just as excited as anyone.
Meanwhile, someone wanted to let us know she was studying.
Though the film won’t hit the big screen until 2019, it looks like Marvel picked the right woman to keep the fans on our toes while we wait! In addition to the fun of “Captain Marvel reading Captain Marvel”, she’s also letting us know where she gets her inspiration from.
There’s been a buzz around the Captain Marvel title since it was announced, and the fact that it’s been pushed back now twice has distressed fans. Especially when one considers that Wonder Woman will reach us two years earlier from the opposing DC Universe. Wonder Woman is the DCEU’s last best hope to gain traction, but they will at least hit one milestone first.
The recent shout-outs and praise for inspirational women both young and old are not new from Larson. Marvel has always excelled at their casting and that success isn’t solely based on how well the actors portray their characters either. It’s a good bet that Larson’s habit of using social media to keep her fans engaged was taken into account when they hired her. Through the tenure of the MCU, their actors have made a habit of showing us that their heroism doesn’t end on the big screen. Something tells me Brie will fit right in with that tradition.
Look at how excited that woman is! Us too, Brie. Us too! You’re going to do both the MCU and women everywhere proud.
