Dumbledore Hinted to Appear in Fantastic Beasts 2

David Yates drops large circular hints that Dumbledore may be a major character in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

More from Harry Potter

In the wake of renewed Pottermania, Warner Brothers is striking while the iron is hot, with a series of interviews with the Fantastic Beasts cast, a press release touting Fantastic Beasts’ sequel, rolling merchandise announcements, and now an interview with director David Yates. It would probably be unkind to note this sudden push of their return to the Potterverse comes in the wake of the abysmal reviews for Suicide Squad, which has up until now been promoted along side Fantastic Beasts all year. Let us hope that the ever expanding Potter-universe (one that the press release hinted would grow ever larger as we go) is received better by critics than their time in the DC one.

Yates’ interview with Reuters was actually done about a month ago, ahead of San Diego Comic Con, but only just released on Friday, post Fantastic Beasts 2 press release. Considering that Yates so far has shown himself to be pretty terrible at Rowling’s edict to #KeepTheSecrets, having accidentally spilled the beans on Beasts 2 details all the way back in May (Warner Brothers asked everyone not to repeat them afterwards), having interviews held until after the WB had gotten their release out was probably the way to go.

To be fair, most of what he told Reuters was in the press release, but true to form, he accidentally let out one secret that probably wasn’t supposed to escape Scamander’s suitcase.

"“There is a mention of some characters that we know and love from previous movies, but we only talk about them fleetingly,” Yates told Reuters.“In the next movie, part two, we’ll get to meet one of them in a significant way. He’s much younger than he used to be, but he’ll be coming back.”"

Perhaps Yates is unaware that that “fleeting” reference was already revealed, having been used as part of the voiceover for the April trailer. “Kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering human life with a beast… Yet one of your teachers argued strongly against your expulsion. I wonder, what makes Albus Dumbledore so fond of you, Mr. Scamander?”

With Fantastic Beasts 2 not set in America, but back across the pond, either in the UK or on the continent, chances are that Scamander will find himself in a world where Gellert Grindelwald is rising to power. And as anyone who has read their wizarding history knows, it’s Albus Dumbledore who steps up to Grindelwald and takes him down a decade later. Having both appear in the second movie would make sense.

Furthermore, back last January, Michael Gambon admitted to the press he was lobbying Rowling to let him return as “Young Dumbledore.” Gambon has now worked with Rowling in both the Potter series and the BBC’s adaptation of her novel The Casual Vacancy. What are the chances of a threefer?

Next: Will there be a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie?

Most likely we’ll have to wait until after the first Beasts movie hits theaters to find out. Either that, or for Yates to fail to #KeepTheSecrets again.
