Good morning, and happy birthday to Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling. It’s the morning after the big midnight book release. Have you been up reading all night, and are just taking a break? Or did you wake up and check the doorstep for your Amazon delivery and your book isn’t here yet? Or is your kindle currently downloading it?

Whatever the reason you’re not reading this second, we’ve got the perfect distraction for you. Last night, as we all know, the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play opened in London, and we’ve got an entire gallery of pictures from the event for you to peruse.

Quite a few luminaries turned out for this event, not just Rowling and the company who put on the show. We also had in attendance Dan Fogler from the other upcoming Potter release this year, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And several high profile Potterheads as showed up. Andrew Scott from Sherlock was there. (Who knew Moriarty was a Potter fan?) Laura Carmichael, who played the bookish Edith on  Downton Abbey. (How apropos!) Even London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, was on hand.

Talking to Pottermore, the mayor admitted he was a huge Potterhead, while at the same time admitting that part of the reason he was there was that he was grateful for such a high profile event in London, helping maintain their arts credentials even as Brexit looms.

"Big fan, yeah. I’m really looking forward to today,’ he says. ‘Particularly looking forward to seeing Hermione and how she is, twenty years on. I think she’s a bit different to the Hermione that we knew. I can’t wait to see how Harry and Ron have aged. I re-watched Deathly Hallows this week so I’m up to speed on what’s going on. To have the world premiere in London is really important to us."

When J.K. Rowling arrived, she admitted that she wants the show to go worldwide. But she also made a comment to Pottermore which might help explain why there’s this odd resistance to turning it into a movie so that everyone can experience it.

"“What we’d really like most of all is to bring people into the theatre who’ve never been to the theatre before,’ she says. ‘I will be so proud to think that kids from my kind of background, who didn’t come from particularly theatre going families, might learn what theatre’s all about through this show. That would be incredible.”"

Let’s check out the galley of pictures, including those amazing shoes Rowling wore.

Oh and by the way, about those “Golden Snitch” shoes Rowling wore?

They’re Chiara by Sophia Webster, and you can get them here.
