The Fantastic Beasts Trailer: Full Screencap Breakdown
By Ani Bundel
We go frame by frame through the Fantastic Beasts Trailer, and bring you the full screencap breakdown and everything we can see.
Late yesterday afternoon, the brand new trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them arrived on the internet, about thirty minutes after it was shown at San Diego Comic Con. Not only did it give a ton of new footage and a glimpse into how our four heroes (Newt, Tina, Jacob and Queenie) come together, but it also introduced a ton of new beasts, and some new shots of the MACUSA.
As a reminder of the synopsis:
"In 1926, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) arrives at the Magical Congress of the United States of America for a meeting with an important official. At this meeting is a magically expanded briefcase, which houses a number of dangerous creatures and their habitats. When the creatures escape from the briefcase, it sends the American wizarding authorities after Newt, and threatens to strain even further the state of magical and non-magical relations. The mistake has a devastating effect on both the Wizarding World and the Muggle World, which is already in a dangerous place, due to the threatening presence of the fanatical New Salem Philanthropic Society, an extremist organisation dedicated to the eradication of wizard-kind. Newt battles to correct the mistake, and the horrors of the resultant increase in violence, fear, and tension felt between magical and non-magical peoples."
Now that we’ve all had the overnight to digest the trailer, watch several times and consider just how much humans are the most dangerous beasts on the planet in newt’s eyes, we’ve sat down and broken down the trailer into screengrabs to obsess over everything we find therein. Eighty shots in all, below is a treasure trove of the adventure faced by Newt Scamander on his first (but maybe not last?) trip to America.
Next: Graves and the House of Collapse
We saw Graves standing in a blown out apartment unit in earlier teasers. It looks like he’s going to investigate quite a few of them over the beginning of the movie as the magic community tries to put together what has happened.
“A ghost with shining white eyes….and it dove underground.”
Graves has an entire pack of aurors who travel with him, but this I believe is the mo-maj who called them in.
(Who ya gonna call? Auror Busters!)
Good thing too, because whatever they’re hunting is still there.
And it’s very impressive…
….Especially since it’s invisible.
Next: Yesterday, a wizard entered New York....
Yesterday a wizard entered New York, with a case……
And it shook the MACUSA down to it’s roots.
Great shot of the seal of the MACUSA, by the way.
Everyone keeps calling this a House-Elf. Clearly, it is Not a House-Elf. It is a Government-Elf.
The Magical Congress of the United States is in Session.
Graves, in his wizard’s robes.
and Seraphina in full finery.
I assume this is a sketch of Queenie? Or maybe of the owner of the house?
Aurors playing cards.
Meanwhile they have no idea that newt has lied his way through customs
And is about to wreak havoc upon an unsuspecting city.
Next: The case of the case
We all decided last time this is the Niffler’s claws that we see.
And the niffler wants to come out.
The Niffler, by the way, seems the main “beast” in the marketing merchandise.
What’s in the case? You’ll find out….
….WHEN PIGS FLY! (Actually, though it’s blurry, I’m thinking that’s the Niffler. Otherwise it doesn’t show up in this trailer at all.)
Somehow between that moment and this, Tina scruffs these two boys by the collar and drags them back to her place to keep them safe.
She may regret that move as Queenie seems quite taken by Jacob.
Even though she’s in the middle of sewing up her dress.
Jacob looks pretty taken by Queenie too. Looks like an illegal romance is about to bloom.
Like Tina didn’t already have her hands full with just this guy.
Next: Magic Is Seeming Out All Around Them
While innocent no-majs play….
……….though the man above might say hello expect no love from the beast below.
Or the Billywig hanging out above!
Or the Occamy in the dark.
Oh look, it’s Jon Voigt! Someone let him have a career even after his daughter Angelina Jolie cut him out of her life publicly.
House-Elf? Try Flapper-Elf.
House-Elf? Try Gin Joint-Elf.
I know Jacob, it’s hard to keep track of them all.
Next: The Second Salemers
The trailer opens with the voice of Ezra Miller (I think) who plays Credence, the closeted wizard son of the head of the Second Salemers. (Whether he’s working for the MACUSA, or is scourer is not clear at this time)
But it’s not until halfway through the trailer that we first see the Second Salem rally for their candidate for office, Henry Shaw Jr.
And when we do, it looks like some beast has been very offended by their divisive rhetoric.
We don’t get to see what it is, but we do get Voight–who plays Shaw Sr’s reaction, and that’s scary enough.
The magical community lives their lives in fear, and Newt’s breach only raises the threat level from Bert to Elmo, as it were.
Even Muggle cops….err, No-maj cops are getting involved.
That’s a fabulous map of Manhattan. I wonder if it does any neat tricks?
Either way, Jacob, best to buckle that helmet on.
Next: House Thunderbird, Represent!
Hello thunderbird!
These aurors must have been House Horned Serpent or something.
We met the Swooping evil in the last trailer.
This time we get a couple of really cool close ups.
Graves apparates into an alley.
Newt is not having it and attacks.
Is that the best way to greet the man who is trying to arrest you and kill all your beloved creatures?
W saw this moment in the Newt Featurette “Hey mister british guy, I think your egg is hatching!”
Hatching? Well then get over there!
Oops, gotta go.
Next: Showdown after Showdown
Graves seems to have had just about enough of this.
But I’m not sure trying to toss a car at Tina’s head is really necessary, do you?
New Beast alert! A Demiguise.
Not sure who is traveling down the NYC alley, but the shot feels like that famous trench one in Star Wars.
Meanwhile, Garves is determined to catch whatever creature he seees ahead.
While Muggles run and panic.
Queenie, I believe in MACUSA HQ?
Down in the subway, Graves attacks Newt.
And scores a hit.
What is this terrible smoke monster beast?
Not sure, but I sure hope it’s not him extinguishing all the street lights.
Next: Muggle Cops Versus Fantastic Beasts
This isn’t going to go well for the muggle… er, no-maj cops, is it?
Newt plays like it’s all under control.
The cops aren’t sop sure.
Perhaps Newt shouldn’t be either.
What *is* that?
I still think newt’s wand might be more effective than the cop’s gun though.
And just as the beast attacks….
We cut away to the roof of Tina and Queenie’s tenement, where they’ve just done some magic thing that impressed Newt and Made Jacob feel like every muggle and no-maj I know.
“I want to be a wizard.”
As do we all.
