The major entertainment mecca known as San Diego Comic Con is only a couple of weeks away. From the pre-show warm up panels on Wednesday July 20th through to Sunday July 24th, the convention that has become a yearly promotional blitz from everything geek related, from Marvel Studios to Game of Thrones will deliver a week’s worth of upcoming goodness. And this year, Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts will be there.

Now historically, SDCC hasn’t been the kindest to the Potterverse, partly because it had the misfortune of being part of the leading edge of the world of fantasy taking over mainstream entertainment, and much of the old guard viewed it as a target for backlash, especially because the fandom was heavily young and female. But ten years on, the world has changed, and though Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them isn’t holding a stand alone panel (yet), they’re coming as part of the Warner Brothers Studio Panel, which will be held in Hall H on Saturday July 23rd, from 11:30am-1:30pm.

According to SDCC’s Unofficial Blog, David Yates has said he is attending as part of the Warner Brothers panel, and is prepping footage from Fantastic Beasts to bring with him. “It’s very exciting and I’m editing it at the moment and it’s coming together really well. We’re going to take a few clips to Comic-Con very shortly and we’re working on the second one as well.”

No word if a trailer will be released in conjunction with the panel, but as we know that one was recently tagged and rated by the Canadian Board of Film Review, it would not surprise me if that’s the case. Rumor is Eddie Redmayne is going, and that co-star Dan Fogler confirmed he is planning on attending a well.

But that’s not all! There are two other panels that will be focused on Pottermania and the aftermath. The first is scheduled for Saturday at 1pm, in Room 28DE. Entitled “A World After Harry” this panel is focusing on how the world of Young Adult fiction changed in the wake of Harry Potter and how to navigate it For the Potter fanfiction writer looking to break through to the mainstream, this looks to be the panel for you.

"YA writers Sarah J. Maas (SDCC special guest, author of Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses series), Laini Taylor (Strange the Dreamer), Jessica Cluess (A Shadow Bright and Burning), Gena Showalter (Firstlife), Thomas E. Sniegoski (Savage), and Soman Chainani (The School for Good and Evil) engage in a rousing discussion of the joys and challenges of crafting fantastical narratives that stand on their own and how the genre has evolved moderated by Tobie Easton (Emerge)."

The second is not on the schedule yet, has now been announced for Sunday. Entitled Fantastic Fans & Where to Find Them, this is a panel dedicated to the world of Harry Potter Fandom. It is scheduled for Sunday July 24th, from 10:15-11:15 in Room 6A.

"Moderated Heidi Tandy (FictionAlley) is joined by journalist Elizabeth Minkel (New Statesman, Fansplaining), educator Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas (Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania), event organizers Adrienne Alwag-Aipia (Los Angeles’ Dumbledore’s Army) and Alexa DiGennero (Leviosacon) and creative fans Stephanie Pressman (Harry Potter Improv), Rachael Vaughn (Snapecast), Justin Zagri (Severus Snape & the Marauders), Elizabeth Barcelos (U.S. Quidditch), and Kat Miller (MuggleNet) to discuss the magic of new canon, including Harry Potter & the Cursed Child (no spoilers, they will “Keep the Secrets”), Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them, and the excitement and creativity in Harry Potter fandom."
