Potter on the Brexit: The Potterverse is Pro-Remain

Harry Potter celebrities and characters weigh in on the Brexit, and it’s unanimous. The Potterverse is Pro-Remain.

More from Harry Potter

as everyone has probably heard–even Americans, tomorrow is a referendum that has enormous political and economic implications for the entire Muggle world–the people of the UK will vote whether to stay or leave the European Union. Dubbed the “Brexit,” this is a huge deal, as the UK leaving the EU could undermine it to the point that it collapses. Not only that, but leaving could also set off another continent wide recession, if not an outright Great Depression that could harm economies globally. And all because a few Brits still have hard feelings about the French stemming from the 13th century.

Are you completely confused yet? You should be. I’m personally confused why anyone thought asking Britons, who not only have hard feelings against the French, but also the Germans, stemming from that whole “The War” business if they want to be in a club together. But never fear! Buzzfeed has been extraordinarily servicey for all of us wizards and witches trying to figure out what in heavens name these Muggles are all on about, and made an explainer, using Harry Potter gifs.

The TL;DR version of their explainer can be summed up in that Pro-Brexit leaver leader Nigel Farage is represented by Lucius Malfoy. They also remind us that the pro-Brexitors accidentally caused the first naval skirmish on the Thames since Shakespeare’s time. Oh and their rhetoric is so terrible that they’ve had their first politician killed while giving a speech via gun violence in the history of ever. Unlike the US, in the UK, that Never Happens.

J.K. Rowling has been tweeting for people to Vote Remain wall to wall for days. But the death of Jo Cox last week finally pushed her into doing what she does best–writing. She’s posted her piece to her personal blog:

"As this country has entered what will come to be seen as one of the most divisive and bitter political campaigns ever waged within its borders, I’ve thought a lot about the rules for creating villains. We are being asked whether we wish to remain part of the European Union and both sides of this campaign have been telling us stories. I don’t mean that in the sense of lying (although lies have certainly been told). I mean that they are appealing to us through our universal need to make sense of the world by storytelling and that they have not been afraid to conjure monsters calculated to stir up our deepest fears."

Her piece is worth reading in full, but if you don’t have the time, here is the money quote:

"No, I don’t think the EU’s perfect. Which human union couldn’t use improvement? From friendships, marriages, families and workplaces, all the way up to political parties, governments and cultural economic unions, there will be flaws and disagreements. Because we’re human. Because we’re imperfect. So why bother building these ambitious alliances and communities? Because they protect and empower us, because they enable bigger and better achievements than we can manage alone. We should be proud of our enduring desire to join together, seeking better, safer, fairer lives, for ourselves and for millions of others."

She;s not the only one who is pleading for her countrymen to Vote Remain either. Helena Bonham Carter was one of many Potter alumni who signed the Vote Remain petition. And according to the Daily Mail: “Actress Emma Thompson has also come out for the Remain campaign – and ran into criticism when she complained about Britain as a ‘little cloud-bolted, rainy corner’ of Europe. Sir Michael Gambon – better known as Harry Potter’s Dumbledore – made clear he also believed Britain was better off in the EU.”

And they have a chart of how fictional characters would vote–and you better believe Professor McGonagall is in the Vote Remain camp

With so many from the Potterverse clearly on the side of Remain, let us hope all our wizard and witch friends in the UK make a moment tomorrow to put on their Muggle clothes and use that godforsaken internet thingy to head to their poling places and vote in sync with Rowling to keep the monsters once again at bay.
