We have our third and sadly final reveal of characters from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child today. I’ll admit, when Pottermore originally said “check back all week” I was hoping for reveals all the way up until June 7th of every character. (The cast is certainly large enough!) But either the rest of the cast are all characters we don’t know, there’s double casting happening because Parts 1 and 2 have a time jump in between that the show is keeping under wraps, or there’s some sort of other major spoiler they’re keeping under wraps.
Or perhaps the Cursed Child production is doing only these characters because these are the ones that contained characters were already confirmed and whose actors were already known, highly suspected or leaked. So far in casting only Sam Clemmetts was the true surprise–we knew who Jamie Parker, Noma Dumezweni and Paul Thornley were playing, and guessed Poppy Miller and Cherrelle Skeete. Rowling herself confirmed both Ginny and Draco being in the show, and we’ve seen Ginny so….
That theory holds up as today’s final reveal contains both Draco and the only other actor whose part leaked early on accident: Anthony Boyle as Scorpius.
As we saw from his accidental CV leak, Boyle was brunette before being cast, so the Malfoy blonde hair was an extreme transformation. He admitted as much to Pottermore.
"“It was such a game changer,” Anthony said of his new look. “As soon as I saw it, it was like, “Okay, I’m playing Scorpius Malfoy – this is real now.” That was such a big moment.”"
But what interested me more was his insistence that the Malfoy look he sports should “constrain” him and make him feel “awkward.” That’s certainly not how Draco saw his family when he first arrived at Hogwarts. “He’s wearing the official Hogwarts uniform before you go and get sorted into your house. He’s a Malfoy so his clothes should be really expensive but quite constraining to make him feel a bit awkward.”
Rowling initially said the swooning over Draco weirded her out. But it seems that she’s learned to embrace it, and expects Scorpius to get much the same reception. “I’ve got a feeling Scorpius is going to do nothing to turn girls off the Malfoy men.”
As for Draco, the actor playing his role is officially our only other major surprise of the week: Alex Price. Or perhaps not–he was the only actor, other than Poppy Miller, on the roster without an assigned role who also had major leading TV credits.
Still, Price suggests he’s a little intimidated by the level of fame being cast in this role is about to bring.
"“The world outside has been brilliantly marshalled and been kept away from us by our producers. It’s only slowly starting to rear its head now and it’s intimidating, a little scary, but also very exciting because Jack is such a brilliant writer and he’s taken the story into a great place 19 years later, particularly for Draco.”"
Both Price’s quotes, by the way, make sure to emphasize that Jack Throne wrote the script for the show. He also credits said script for helping him make Draco “his own.” “Jack Thorne’s script. Start right there… And there’s obviously a massive history of books to draw on. You could tie yourself in knots worrying about it. But our first job is to serve this play and J.K. Rowling’s characters as best we can.”
If there’s one take away from these reveals, it’s that every actor working on the show seems to feel that way. I’m only sorry we won’t get to meet more of them ahead of the June 7th first preview of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Part 1.
