The reveals of the major characters in costume from Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continue! Yesterday we got to see Jamie Parker as Harry for the first time, in full costume, as well as an introduction to the actress playing Ginny (Poppy Miller) and the teen actor playing their son Albus, Sam Clemmett.
Today, we get the other two thirds of the “Golden Trio” plus the reveal of the actress playing their daughter. Unfortunately, this means we’re only learning who one new actress is playing, as we already knew who were playing Ron and Hermione. But for those who were having trouble picturing Noma Dumezweni as the Greatest Witch of Her Age, the wait is over.
Dumezweni as Hermione:
A surprisingly conservative jacket, but I suppose someone who plans to rise high in the ministry would be. Speaking to Pottermore, Dumezweni says the costume was the moment where she really saw her Hermione come to life. “Being in full costume for the first time was stunning, because I went, “Ahhh there you are!”
As for Paul Thornley, he breaks it to us that they are not the “Weasleys,” but the “Granger-Weasleys.” Because of course they are.
Funny that a boy who spent his life complaining about his mother’s handknit jumpers would find himself wearing one in his introduction.
"“We had to make it look as though he doesn’t really care what he wears in the morning. We wanted to find a jumper, that is definitely his favourite jumper, and that I think gets washed occasionally. He wants to essentially be comfortable at all times, hence comfortable cords, comfortable jumper, comfortable shoes. I don’t believe he’s a man who spends an awful lot of time shopping.”"
Thornley as says that Ron and Hermione are still married, so for those who thought that the two might have separated or divorced, it’s looking like that hasn’t come to pass.
As for their daughter Rose, once again we guessed correctly when it came to the cast as to who she would be played by: Cherrelle Skeete.
If you look close, you can see a yellow stripe on her uniform under her robes. So Gryffindor? Or Hufflepuff? Skeete isn’t going to give anything away on that front, only that her character takes after mother.
"“Rose is ambitious, obviously her mum is Hermione so she’s got a lot to live up to. I think they’re quite similar in the fact they put a lot of pressure on themselves. And she just wants to do the right thing.”"
Skeete is extremely excited over getting her uniform. “I’ve been looking at it every day in the wardrobe department, waiting for the day I can get on the Hogwarts Express.”
On the subject of Skeete’s character, J. K. Rowling echoes her: “Rose is like her mother, but more secure, more grounded. She was born to wizards and knows her place in the world.”
Rowling also reveals that Thornley is “funny and brilliant” as Ron, and that Dumezweni actually workshopped the role of Hermione from the beginning of the process.
Rather than give away any more details, the actors gush over being in tech rehearsals and how much they can’t wait for the show to begin playing for audiences on Tuesday of next week.
Pottermore promises one more reveal tomorrow–will it be Draco and Scorpius? Or Neville and Hannah? Or more of the Weasley clan? We can’t wait to find out.
