You can tell a lot about a person from visiting their house. Are they neat freaks? Are they the sort of person that has a perfect living room that’s only for show, and everyone walks by on their way to the far more comfy (and lived in) den? Or is their entire house homey and not too concerned about stray pet hairs on the couch?

This “learning about a person through their home” goes double in the acting world. When an actor is playing a part, there are two things that are the most important when getting into character. The first is the costume–especially if wigs, contacts and period clothing is involved. it’s the first time you can feel what it would be like to live in their skin. The second is the set of their home.

Just before the sets for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them came down at the end of filming, to be flat packed away in storage, (all the better to be able to pull them out and recreate for the new wing of the Warner Brothers Studio Tour London as part of the ongoing Potterverse exhibit), Pottermore talked to the actresses who play the lead women in the film about the apartment they share.

Alison Sudol, who plays younger sister Queenie Goldstein, spoke movingly of the insight into her character that she got the first time she stepped on set:

"“It gave me insight into Queenie that I hadn’t had before. I’d imagined her life in my head but to walk around in it was really something: to see what was cooking in the kitchen… it was like being in a friend’s house. You know how you’re like, “Oh wow, okay, that’s so your art, those are your things, you like this kind of butter, or whatever.” You understand somebody on a very intimate level when you’ve been in their home and I loved that.”"

Katherine Waterson, who plays older sister Tina, said that seeing the sensible row of books by her character’s bed was a grounding moment for her.

"“It’s so nice to have all the books by Tina’s bed and have that environment that says so much about her. It feels like she lives there. What’s so great about the production team is that you get an idea in your head and they can manifest it. This is one of my favourite locations of the whole movie.”"

As to the details of the apartment, Pottermore doesn’t get into much–clearly they want it to be a surprise for fans when they arrive their for the first time along with Newt Scamander and his no-maj pal Jacob. For that we’ll just have to wait for more footage from trailers, or the movie itself to arrive in November.
