Very interesting news from Colin Farrell this week on the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise. The actor is currently doing a press tour for his own upcoming film The Lobster, which he was nominated for Best Actor at the Irish Film Awards this past year. Though the movie has been out in the UK long enough that he’s already garnering nominations, it hasn’t reached the US yet, where it opens here May 13th. The Lobster is a fantasy film, with the synopsis “In a dystopian society, single people must find mates within 45 days or risk being transformed into animals.”

Farrell has been doing a lot of fantasy recently, as it turn out. As we all know, he is one of the bigger casting choices for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie. And naturally, his interview for one fantasy film lead to questions about the other. But it turns out, Farrell actually knows less about Fantastic Beasts than you might think.

Speaking to ComingSoon.net, Farrell admits he hasn’t even seen a draft of the movie himself, like us he has only gotten to see the trailer. But what’s very interesting is when the interviewer starts asking if he’s already lined up for the sequel–and Farrell seems surprised to learn there is one. “No, I don’t know what’s happening. As far as I knew it’s standalone. I don’t know what their intentions are.”

When the interviewer says that Parts 2 and 3 are confirmed–and have been since the first movie’s announcement (for 2018 and 2020 release dates respectively)–Farrell shrugs that he’s not surprised they have planned sequels lined up. It is after all, the way franchises function in the second decade of the 21st century. But the truth is, no one ever mentioned a second movie to him, and he has no deal in his contract to return, saying: “Jeez, I can’t even think straight now. Not quite sure. I’ll text David Yates and find out.”

Now, Farrell could be pulling a Kit Harington on us–as we all know Rowling is as big into keeping spoilers under wraps as Game of Thrones is. But if he’s being honest, then it could be indicative that the next installments of the movies do not take place in America, but back in the British wizarding world where Rowling is far more comfortable. or it could be that Warner Brothers is less certain on sequels than we think. After all, as Farrell point out, there are no sure things in the movie business.

I mean you put that theme music up and J.K. Rowling and welcome back to a world of magic… It’s part of the Harry Potter universe. There’s no sure things. There are sometimes things that are surprise successes and there are things that were designed purely for box office success that don’t work. This would be as sure a thing as possible but there are no sure things.

Point well taken sir. We’ll all have to wait and see.
