Potter Alumni Shine at BAFTA Awards

The Potter alumni at last night’s BAFTA Awards shine on, even if none of them take home the big prizes.

Though none of the Potter cast who were nominated for BAFTAs took home prizes last night, they still had a grand old time at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Gardens. The BAFTAs aren’t usually considered to be Oscar bellweathers, though they can hint at broad support for one film over another.

Eddie Redmayne, for instance lost out to Leonardo DiCaprio for his performance in The Revenant, as he’s been doing all season. Julie Walters, who played Molly Weasley, also lost out to Kate Winslet in Steve Jobs. But where Maggie Smith has mostly lost out to Cate Blanchett or Saoirse Ronan so far this year, this time her loss in the Best Actress category was to Brie Larson in Room. Brooklyn, for the record, was shut out across all their categories (Sorry Domhnall Gleeson.) That’s the first time that’s happened to the plucky romantic immigrant story all season.

Eddie Redmayne did get to have screen and stage time though. As last year’s Best Actor winner for The Theory of Everything, he got to hand Kate Winslet her award for Supporting Actress. And Maggie Smith got to participate in the Valentine’s Day “Kiss Cam” the production set up in honor of the holiday. She got to kiss Leonardo DiCaprio. Who doesn’t think that Smith’s still got it, even at 81 years of age?

But perhaps the one having the worst night was Stephen Fry, who is known to UK Potter fans as the voice reading the audiobooks. Fry was the host of the evening, and made a rather-in-bad-taste joke comparing costume designer Jenny Beavan, who won for Mad Max: Fury Road, to a “bag lady.” By the time Twitter got done with him for that, he’d deleted his account, despite his protestations that Beaven was a “dear friend” who “got the joke.” Fry is, or was, a prolific Twitter user, so this is quite a bad night for him. He’s been hosting the BAFTAs for a decade now. We’ll see if this might finally be the acerbic joke that finally gets him removed from the position, or if the social media dust up will be soon forgotten.
