Metro Campaigns for Emma Watson to Play Doctor Who

With a full cast turnover rumored at Doctor Who in the wake of Steve Moffat’s departure in 2017, some outlets have started campaigning for Emma Watson to be cast in the lead role.

The biggest news in fantasy television broke last month, when the rumors of Steven Moffat’s departure from Doctor Who post-Series 10 were confirmed, along with the distressing news that the new season would not air for another year. it will be a long goodbye, but at least the Whoniverse has time to adjust.

Peter Capaldi has not said one way or the other about his future plans for playing the lead role, but it was generally understood when he was hired that when Moffat left, he probably would too. Unlike some of the other men who have held the role, his contracts are only a single series long each time, so if the BBC really wants him to stay for the new showrunner, there will probably be long and protracted negotiations.

With this turnover once again come to calls for casting a woman in the Doctor role. Moffat has certainly done his best to set the stage for such a gender flip, not only having the Master regenerate as “Missy” in Series 8, but closing out Series 9 with a high ranking TimeLord general regenerating into a woman of color, and expressing relief that her time as being generated as a man had ended. And apparently, MetroUK knows exactly which woman it should be: the actress known for playing the Brightest Witch of Her Age: Emma Watson.

“For over 50 years, Doctor Who has been a man. And frankly, we’re bored. It’s time to breathe fresh air into the show and switching gender could just be the shot in the arm Doctor Who needs.”

Their arguments include:

  • “Watson’s post-Potter screen career has probably been the best out of the three youngsters.”
  • “Like many actors who take on the role [of Doctor Who], Emma is keen on charitable work.”
  • “Watson has impressed many times on the interview circuit, proving herself to be sharp, honest and a lot of fun.”
  • A “sexy Doctor” would be a shock to the system
  • An almost assured male companion. (They cheekily suggest Aidan Turner, which, if paired with Watson, might accidentally burn television screens down across the nation.)

For the record though, a female Doctor does not necessarily means a male companion. Male Doctors have had Male Companions across time and space before, and when Clara took off in her own Diner shaped TARDIS as the end of the last series, her companion was Maisie Williams. Still, Emma Watson as the Doctor would certainly be a watershed moment if it came to pass.

And if making the Doctor female is simply something the BBC can’t quite bring themselves if stomach, even nearly two decades into the 21st century, perhaps they can hire Rupert Grint, and the Doctor can finally get his wish to be a ginger.
