Rupert Grint on Ron’s Future: “He and Hermione are Probably Separated”

In a wide ranging interview with four stars of the Harry Potter series, Rupert Grint (Ron), Katie Leung (Cho), Matt Lewis (Neville) and Evanna Lynch (Luna) consider where their characters would be today.

As we all know, the Celebration of Harry Potter was on this weekend at Universal Studios. The Huffington Post nabbed the opportunity to sit down with the four stars of the movie who appeared at the event: Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) and Katie Leung (Cho Chang), and has them reflect on their time with the series, as well as the world that is going to be continuing on without them in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

One of the questions is that after the experience of doing a Franchise film at such a young age, would they be willing to do another one? All four agree that they wouldn’t turn it down. As Matthew Lewis says: “Hey, if Star Wars come knocking on the door tomorrow, I’m not going to go, “Um no, guys, I’m sorry, I don’t want to do four films, it’s fine.” No, of course not. I’d think about it, and I love Star Wars, etc. But there would definitely be a bit of trepidation in joining a big franchise again for that amount of time.” Grint seems a little less gung ho, saying that it can get suffocating, but as Leung points out, you also really get to know a character, and feel safe in the environment.

Another question is on their knowledge of the world. All four agree here too: Evanna Lynch, who was famously a Potter superfan who basically won the role of Luna simply because she has her visualized in a way none of the other auditioners for the part did, is the one they all turn to. Lynch herself seems made a little nervous y this faith in her unshakeable knowledge, before admitting she hasn’t been stumped yet.

But the best part is when the interviewer asked them to theorize where they are now. Rupert Grint is on record saying that he wishes he’d been cast in the new Harry Potter play, but perhaps that’s because he has a very dark idea of where his character’s life would be now:

I would expect Ron has probably divorced Hermione already. I don’t think that relationship would have done very well… He’s living on his own, in a little one-bedroom apartment. He hasn’t got a job.

The interviewer suggests that Ron is on Tinder doing horribly, and Grint agrees “Exactly.” Lewis pipes up–since his fate is a known one from the books (he’s a professor at Hogwarts, married to Hannah Abbott), he fills in the idea that Professor Longbottom would be doing his best to help Ron back on his feet. “..he’s trying to get Ron a job, man. And he keeps throwing it back in his face, like, “I don’t need your help, Neville; Jesus, just leave it.” And I’m like, “Come on, it’s fine, we’ll sort it out, just trying to get you back into the fold.” Yeah, him and Hermione don’t see eye to eye because I’ve taken Ron’s side in the relationship, obviously. They’ve got everyone split off, friends wise. I don’t know who you guys chose? Did you choose Hermione?”

Leung and Lynch agree they’d be on Ron’s side because he’d need it more. Their own ideas of their characters fates are pretty awesome also. Lynch thinks that Luna would have a David Attenborough type specials proving the existence of all the crazy magical creatures she’s always insisted were real and people thought she was nutso about. And Leung?

“I reckon Cho would probably have become a really successful entrepreneur, and really cold and ruthless… she’s cried all the tears she could cry, and now she’s become real cold and heartless.”

I love it. She’s not a dark wizard or anything. She’s just a capitalist.
