The CW teen drama Riverdale is cancelled. Season seven, scheduled to air sometime in midseason 2023, will be the last.

Riverdale certainly had plenty of dark and sinister plots since its 2017 premiere. Storylines ranged from murder to drug-addled cults, parental strains, sorcery, and the supernatural. At times, the writing seemed like it was just too much to consume but still delivered suspense and interest to its audience. Riverdale aired a special three-episode “spinoff” titled Rivervale as their season six premiere to shake things up. It was set in a parallel universe, filled with character history and, of course, heavily depicted supernatural material.

Then, there was the love triangle, or rather, square, between Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhardt), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), which seemed to distract the occurring events in the town of Riverdale.

Despite being renewed for its seventh season back in March, the show is the eighth one cancelled following last week’s cancellation block. Riverdale trails behind the axing of Dynasty, Naomi, 4400, Legacies, Charmed, In the Dark, and last but not least,  Roswell, New Mexico. Out of all of them, Riverdale succeeded them in seasons, and over 100 episodes, which is a remarkable feat for The CW Network.

But Riverdale was not all just teenage angst and biker gang rivels. It gave a beautiful “goodbye” to Archie’s dad, Fred Andrews, who died saving a woman in season four. Fred was written out due to the death of Luke Perry, who starred as Fred beginning in the first season.

Will Riverdale have a proper series finale?

According to the CW Network CEO, Mark Pedowitz, the drama will have a well-deserving ending.

“I’m a big believer in giving series that have long runs an appropriate sendoff,” he said in a call to the press. “We want to make sure it goes out the right way.”

Additionally, the show’s creators, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Pedowitz, believed that “ending after seven seasons felt right.”
