Ten queer TV characters that made our 2021

7. Nia Nal
Even though Supergirl has come to an end, Nia Nal will always remain close to our hearts.
Nia, aka Dreamer, was TV’s first transgender superhero, and she made her debut during season 4 of The CW’s Supergirl. She was played by trans actress and activist Nicole Maines, and her storylines on the series always served to bring attention to trans issues and forge a new path for trans characters on screen, improving queer TV with every episode she was in.
Despite season 6 being her last, the show presented ample opportunity to explore Dreamer, especially in the season’s two flashback episodes and an episode dedicated to repairing her shattered relationship with her sister. We will sorely miss seeing Nia on our screens next year, but this won’t be the last we see of her.
Maines took to Twitter after the Supergirl finale and posted a photo of her computer screen, typing what looked to be the start of a Dreamer comic. DC comics was tagged in the photo and Maines dawned her screen-used Dreamer gloves.
