Underrated queer show: The Wilds

Platform: Amazon Prime

Cast: Sophia Ali, Shannon Berry, Jenna Clause, Reign Edwards, Helena Howard, Erana James, Mia Healey, Sarah Pidgeon, Rachel Griffiths

Premise: This drama series centers around. group of teenage girls who find themselves stranded on a deserted island after a supposed plane crash, but are unaware that they are really the subjects of an extreme social experiment (image a cross between Lost and an all-girl Lord of the Flies). As the girls work together to overcome their differences and survive their new way of life, suspicions arise about what exactly happened to them and who was involved.

The Wilds is a riveting series that has been praised for its performances, writing, and plot. Each of the girls has their own traumas to work out and in a situation that could’ve easily devolved into backstabbing and infighting, really turns out to be a story about survival and healing with the help of others.

Toni (James) is an out lesbian with anger management issues who comes from a broken home. Shelby (Healey) is a closeted beauty pageant queen from a conservative Christian family in Texas. While Toni is upfront about her sexuality, we get to see Shelby go through the motions of coming to terms with who she is, as well as mistakes from her past that continue to haunt her. Inevitably these two end up together, and we can wait to see what is in store for them in season two (which is currently in production).
