Underrated queer show: Batwoman

Platform: The CW

Cast: Javicia Leslie, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Nicole Kang, Dougray Scott

Premise: Following the departure of Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane, Gotham finds itself another female caped crusader in the form of Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder. Ryan is a highly skilled yet undisciplined fighter who is homeless at the beginning of the season and adopts the Batwoman persona after finding the costume in the wreckage of an airplane Kate was on. With criminals and corruption running rampant throughout the city, sidekicks Lucas Fox (Johnson) and Mary Hamilton (Kang) work with Ryan to fight evil on the streets of Gotham.

The show boasts one of the few casts of characters made up primarily of POC on network television. Tandy plays Sophie Moore, a bisexual military academy graduate who is the former love interest of Kate Kane and has an off-again, on-again relationship with Alfred’s daughter, Julia Pennyworth (Christina Wolfe). Ryan is an out lesbian who struggles at first with her newfound dual identity. Surprisingly for network television, the show regularly depicts same-sex kissing and authentic love scenes.

Following Rose’s departure, Batwoman went through a bit of a soft reboot at the beginning of its second season with the introduction of Ryan Wilder. A show that easily could’ve imploded without it’s former main lead, instead rose to the occasion and experienced a renaissance, full of character development and more intimate storytelling.
