A new release date for Black Widow – July 9 – as well as the confirmation that the film will also be available for a $30 premium fee on Disney+ the same day for those who aren’t yet comfortable returning to movie theaters in the COVID era is reason enough to celebrate.

And Marvel Studios decided to do so by releasing a brand new trailer that not only hints that Black Widow will finally delve into Natasha Romanoff’s past, but seems to promise that it will establish a real and lasting legacy for the character – beyond what happened to her on Vormir.

Black Widow was originally supposed to hit theaters on May 1, 2020, and has been delayed three times thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. It stars Scarlett Johansson and takes place after the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War but before those of Avengers: Infinity War.

The film will introduce up-and-coming actress Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, a character many expect to take up the Black Widow mantle in the wake of Natasha’s death in Avengers: Endgame.  (It seems worth noting, too, that this trailer is the first time that the film’s promotional materials have actually acknowledged Nat’s death and that this movie is, in fact, a prequel.)

The trailer features new footage with star David Harbour (who plays Red Guardian) and a girl who appears to be a young version of Natasha.  “My girls are the toughest girls in the world!” he enthuses in a flashback. Which begs the question, how were Nat and her sister separated – from their parents and from each other?

If this new clip is anything to go by, get ready to be punched in the gut by a lot of emotions. (I was most definitely not prepared for the piano-only Avengers theme or the clips of Nat from earlier MCU films.) My heart.

dark. Next. Black Widow will release simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access
