Gather ’round, switches! Zip it, listen. We finally have news about Motherland: Fort Salem‘s return to Freeform.

It’s been a long, silent, seven months since showrunner Eliot Laurence and the Motherland cast gave us a taste of what to expect in season 2 at last year’s Comic-Con@Home. Since then, it’s been hush hush about anything concerning the anticipated return of this witchy drama. Thankfully, some of our waiting is now over.

TVLine is reporting that Motherland: Fort Salem is set to catch its second wind in the summer. The show’s release season was announced at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on February 26. That’s a vague time frame, we know, especially considering summer TV airs anywhere from May to September, but at least our favorite band of witch soldiers will be returning in 2021.

In the meantime, we can start speculating over the synopsis teasing season 2:

"“Raelle, Tally and Abigail confront higher stakes, dangerous magic and a new threat from an ancient group of witch-hunters, the Camarilla. In the first season, we saw our trio of young witches follow in the footsteps of their foremothers, defending the nation from The Spree as part of the United States Army. Their training is intensified when they are promoted to attend War College, where their magic, relationships and beliefs will be pushed to the limits. While General Alder seeks out new witches to join the wars to come, The Spree and the Army learn their fight may no longer be with one another. But how can two enemies work together to thwart a hatred that won’t stop until all witches are exterminated?”"

Motherland: Fort Salem returns to Freeform in summer 2021

We’re not exactly sure how season 2 is going to pull off allying the witches with the terrorist group that’s been hellbent on bringing an end to the Witch’s Army but it’s certainly going to connect a few dots considering the reveal of a Spree leader’s identity hitting closer to home than we thought in the season 1 finale.

The union, of course, has to mean an impending Raylla reunion but be ready for a bumpy, angst-filled ride for these two star-crossed lovers. The pair didn’t exactly end on the best of terms, and Scylla’s been sitting on a secret concerning Raelle’s mom that’s going to rock her world once she finds out.

Though between the witch bomb she and Abigail unleashed — and Tally’s new status as a biddy for Alder — Raelle’s got her plate pretty full in Motherland season 2. Not to mention we’re going to Witch College, which is sure to make basic look like a witchified kiddie pool.

But the witch world isn’t the only thing our witches are going to have to contend with in Motherland‘s sophomore season. According to Laurence, the witches will be brushing up against more witch hate from non-magical humans, as well as the -isms and phobias that plague their world such as sexism, racism, and homophobia.

Hopefully, this will be the show’s opportunity to engage race, considering the Salem Accords which binds witches into compulsory military service are based on the real-life slave codes that subjugated Black people for centuries.

We’ll have to wait to see how this all plays out, but with the announcement of a summer release for Motherland: Fort Salem season 2, we expect more information to start pouring in about the season as we get closer to a definitive release date. Stay tuned, switches, our show is nearly back!
