Cardi B struck gold again with this collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion and broke the internet along the way. “WAP” was an instant hit, a provocative female pleasure anthem we hadn’t seen since the days of Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself.”
The hit single solidified Cardi B as a serious contender in the predominantly male rap industry, while also catapulting Megan Thee Stallion to superstardom. The video for “WAP” garnered more than 26 million views within the first 24 hours of it’s release on YouTube, leading to a hugely popular dance challenge on TikTok. It doesn’t hurt that the video is sexy af and empowering all at the same time.
The single dominated leading Best Tracks of 2020 lists from multiple media outlets, including Rolling Stone, NPR, Billboard, and USA Today. “WAP” would go on to win an American Music Award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Song and a People’s Choice award for Best Collaboration of 2020. The wide-spread popularity of the song is proof that women are making their mark on the hip-hop and rap scene in a way we have never seen before.
